My first house

Recommended Posts

I got tired of renting, so I decided to take the plunge into home ownership. I wanted to live in the Hilliard area, and most houses in my price range were either way too small, or total pieces of shit needing way too much money. I ended up getting lucky and found this...

It's a 5 bed, 2.5 bath, 1600 sq ft built in 1970. I'm not thrilled with a single car garage, but everything else about the house is awesome. It was owned by an elderly lady, and it could use some updating. My girlfriend is an interior designer (plus she has impeccable taste) so we're definitely going to add our personal touches as soon as we get settled in.

As far as the exterior, I already took off that iron railing by the front door, and the storm door will be replaced next. Eventually I'll go with vinyl siding (and a different color) but that's way down the road. In the meantime I just want to do some little things here and there to up the curb appeal. A little landscaping should go a long way.

Here's the only thing the PO left in the garage, this little piece of paneling with tool/bit holders on it...

The garage will be my first priority

Nice man! Got a basement?

No basement. At first I wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing, but the more I thought about it, I decided I didn't really care. Hopefully I won't regret it later. But it's just the two of us living here, so we have more space than we need. There's a decent sized storage shed in the back and a large storage area next to the pantry across from the laundry room. Plus I have my man cave on the first floor (back of the house) so a basement just doesn't seem necessary.

I was looking in Hilliard and ran into the same issues you faced. Anything around $120k had at least one deal-breaker.

Yep. I was looking around $100-120k, and couldn't find anything worth buying. When the sellers dropped their asking price from $140k, it caught my attention. Once I saw the house in person, I knew it was the right one. It's also in a great location, right off Cemetery and Leap Rd.

Awesome! Congrats again Steve. That sectional is gonna look great in there.

It does look great, I'm laying on it right now. I LOVE this thing

We are 90% moved in. Just need to get a few more things from my girlfriend's apartment and the move will be complete.

Very jealous man. Nice looking home.

The missus and i are looking to purchase a home some time next year and we have no idea where to start. Was there any issue buying it without you guys being married?

Thanks! Nope it's just more paperwork, didn't have any issues though.

Awesome. Glad you're excited. BTW, I've been in there...

For real? When?

It was up for sale awhile back, too. I know for a fact we looked at and considered it and I do feel we went in, too, but I could be wrong. (We were viewing so many properties at the time.) We wanted less bedrooms, but bigger ones and a well-fenced yard w/a 2 car garage. It ultimately fell off the list. To be fair, we went with renting some more instead of buying, anyway.

Can't wait to show my gf the pics again and see if she recognizes it. Then I'll tell her someone here purchased it.

Nice! Do you remember around what time it was listed for sale?

Congratulations, im in the same boat. Want to buy a house and love to stay in hilliard but everything is more then I want to spend for what I want in a home. ( basically a big garage lol )

There's a 1200 sq ft house down the street from me, looks nice, asking price 120k, and has what looks like a 3.5 car detached garage

Give me a call...I'll be happy to run through the process with you and get you pre-approved. 614-339-1206.

There really is no difference between being married or un-married for the mortgage process if you are both going to be on the loan.
