Anyone have any tips on removing poison ivy from property? I have been trying to kill it the last couple years but it's growing like wildfire. The family has ow ed this property for 50+ years and it was never like this. It has overtaken trees and fence lines. My biggest issue is that I can not afford to lose anymore trees so I am trying to be careful what I spray. I have been using poison ivy killer spray from home depot but it only seems to kill the small stuff. I have some vines and trees of ivy that are over 2" thick .I will post some pics

Poison Ivy is tough to kill. You can spray it with round up and kill everything around that area but it might take a few sprays. The vines growing up trees can be cut down at the ground and wait till it dies enough to pull it off. No easy way to get rid of it.

I was told if you took the herbicide and brushed it on the leaves it would kill the plant. Might work on the vines growing up the trees, since it never comes in contact with the tree it probably would not hurt. Make sure you mix the roundup or whatever you are using correctly. A stronger solution is not always better.

2,4-D Amine, located at your local tractor supply, farm and fleet, or rural king. This will destroy all broadleaf vegetation you spray it on. Another thing you could try if you dont care about the grass around the base is 41% glyphosate. It's the active ingredient in roundup, and much much cheaper, also available at your local tractor supply, farm and fleet, or rural king.

Yeah I have issues with poison ivy too. Previous owners of the house put in an ivy bed between 2 large trees in my back yard. Well poison ivy has now also got into the ivy bed. Any sprays will also kill off anything in the ivy bed. So I am at this point, I don't know what to do. If I spray anything, I kill off everything and then end up with a rock lined bed of mud.

And to make matters worst, I am very allergic to poison ivy. Any time I get it, I end up having to go to the doctor to get steroid pills.

  • 3 weeks later...
So as an update, I have been spraying once a week. So far still getting rid of the gallons of poison ivy spray I had. If I spray the leaves it kills them within a week but only what gets sprayed. It doesn't seem to be reaching g the root system. I am making progress but I am going to try the other suggestions as well.
