Need opinions on intake.

Obviously, sucking hot air from the engine bay through a tiny filter is not conducive for making horsepower.

 

So here is what I am currently working with. (Just a short filter on the turbo behind the headlight assemble with I opened up in this pic) Turbo sucks 100% hot air.

Option A-Straight shot.

 

Pro's

-Straight shot! In theory-maximum airflow

-Removes the weight of the headlights from the front end

-May look cool with a simple screen replacing the OE headlight cover

 

Cons

-Have to build and alternative headlight system to sit in the FTP section fot he bumper

-Have to duct cold air to it, or run a screen in place of the OE headlight cover

-Would not work with FC2000 bumper I may switch to in the future.

Option B

 

Pros-

-True COLD air coming directly from the brake duct cut out in the bumper

-Keep 100% functionality the 80's pop up headlight action

-Can remove filter and add a Ram Air Velocity stack for track duty

-Most room for a long filter-full 9inch-least restrictive

 

Cons-

-Would have to have 2 tight radius 90' bends in the intake. Would this hurt flow?

-Heavier-keeping the OE headlight-

Opinions welcome! I am leaning towards Option B, but would that pose a significant restriction over Option A?

Option B. The bend won't hurt too much, provided you're working with enough diameter.

 

This. Even better if your bends have a decent radius on them. If it were me, I'd mount the filter directly on the turbo and wrap it in a shroud, then feed cold air up from the bumper through that hole that's sitting right below where the filter would be. That would help with the packaging.

Thats actually not a terrible idea.....but I would lose all hope of any Ram air action.

 

Also, there is not a hole on the other side, but I got a saw zall for that.....:p

You could also make a air box and sheild it from heat, and get something like this to work.

That is a good idea. You are not going to get any ram air enough to make much difference with those beastly turbos anyway I bet.

Option C, cut hole in hood, stick air filter through said hole, clamp that bitch down and pray she holds at 140 :p

That is a good idea. You are not going to get any ram air enough to make much difference with those beastly turbos anyway I bet.

 

Its not really the turbo size-its where its at on the compressor map-if its at the edge of its efficiency range pressurized air coming into the inlet will move it back and free up some power. I hate to use psi as a reference since its a mass-flow thing, but think of it like this-

 

Turbo A is 90% efficiency at 30 psi, and only 70% efficient at 34psi on a 2.0L Maxes out at 35 psi.. if you can get 4psi of charge in front of it, it will move air at 90% efficiency at 30psi, and will have a higher max boost around 39psi

 

That being said-there is some gains to be had with true ram air there, but your right in saying probably not much considering my boost levels.

Yea I agree with Greg. This would cost less, weigh less, and flow better

That's what I use too, but in looking for something that allows a little more... Control...

I have a HF jigzaw but only wood blades, and zero time to fuck around. I had 1 hour of "loud car time" and I had to take advatange of it. :p

 

I mean yeah cuz more power is what that car needs.

 

Not more power-easier power. More power will come with more motor :p
