schmuckingham
I picked this Soarer up from Pakie last summer. I drove it all summer long with no issues but it started to smoke on loaded decel and warm start up. The valve stem seals are brand new so I ruled those out pretty quickly. At least the engine looked good! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_20140514_183708_zps225ca3ff.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG_20140821_115955_zpsddebe71d.jpg Since bearings for the factory turbos are hard to come by I was going to try and use 1JZ turbos but that is a no go, or at least too much work to make work. I took the turbos off and found the rear one was toast. I can say that taking these things off is a PITA: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/20141119_173321_zpsfd121870.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG_20150102_161834_zps6cc97fdd.jpg Once the snails were off I noticed oil in the exhaust ports so I had to tear the head off to make sure I wasnt getting blow by or something else horrible. Butterfly technology LOL http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0057_zpsd81462e9.jpg The intake was super duper nasty inside. It sat in a parts cleaner for a day and still gunk was coming out of it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0058_zps4b974191.jpg Distributor internals looked good, although the cap and rotor has seen some mileage. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0062_zps1fb6a9aa.jpg
schmuckingham
:fuuuu::fuuuu::fuuuu::fuuuu::fuuuu::fuuuu::fuuuu: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0064_zps32822322.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0065_zpsa764d138.jpg Once I got the head off I could see why it would smoke: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0067_zpsc1beb0f8.jpg Everything else looked really good. I figured out that the valve stems themselves where getting loose hence the smoke. Cylinder walls looked nice and the valves where pretty clean. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0068_zps0a17148d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0069_zpsd4e8e2a6.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0070_zps319a51eb.jpg

schmuckingham
I Pulled out the super JDM boost controller............:dumb: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG_0105_zpsn0xy1v2d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG_0106_zpscwf1wswn.jpg After many many many hours of scraping and stones I got the deck surface all cleaned up and the pistons de-oiled. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG_0107_zpsx0ucsdjd.jpg When the car was running I always had a different engagement with the clutch pedal so I drained the "fluid"...... more like someone spit in the reservoir . I also found a leak on the inside of the car and pulled the master, swapped the guts out of a USDM one into my housing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG_0109_zpsptpo1scg.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG_0104_zpslcwq0drv.jpg Starting a collection f parts in the trunk to hide fom teh wifez: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0056_zpsf5317996.jpg
schmuckingham
Once I got the head back from the machine shop I thought long and hard (:lolguy:) about going single or staying twins. If I went single I would need either a Y pipe made for the factory manifold or a whole new manifold. I then remember I have a fellow Ginger bro that can glue things together so we rubbed our ginger facial hair together and came up with a plan. Head after cleansing: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0135_zpsitaro81p.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0137_zpsbyikl1fb.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0136_zpsnvajfnnh.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0134_zpstxb2syth.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0133_zpsko34wo08.jpg I picked up a "30R" from Chad at ON3 for now. dual ball bearing with a V band exhaust housing. Will be running a Turbosmart 40mm wastegate dumped to atmo and a 3" downpipe. A/R on the housing is small at .48 but this is a small motor. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG_0115_zpsiqfgyyvr.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG_0116_zpsnfraxzea.jpg
schmuckingham
How hard has it been finding service parts so far? It depends really. Some of the JZ stuff works and some of the 3M stuff works but it is really hit or miss. All of the suspension and brakes are the same as a MKIII except my steering wheel is on the right. If this is the case and you are interested in big brakes you may be able to make the Mercedes S500 brake kit in the front work assuming you have the same braking system. schmuckingham
can these things actually make power mike? Guys in AU are seeing 300-400 on stock engines but they have more support in the aftermarket. I would be honestly happy at 300 I am so turned on by this car. Full or semi? schmuckingham
The 1G is like the 7M and uses a composite gasket but unlike the 7M it doesn't suffer from blowing head gaskets. I contacted Cometic and they made me a new composite gasket, but the more I thought about the more I wanted to run an MLS gasket. Lucky for my Rock Auto sells EU parts and the 1G-FE uses the same head gasket but in MLS. I ordered two different brands and a new set of alignment dowels. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0140_zpsfskrjvbb.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_0141_zps6efans6w.jpg I dont have any photos of the head going on but its pretty standard. I used ARP main studs for a 2JZ for head studs and torqued them down to 75 ft/lbs. i also ran into a problem with the cap and rotor. Since this engine was never sold here I could find replacements stateside. I did find a BNIB cap from Japan which is good new, but the bad new is the rotor isnt made by Toyota anymore and no one makes a replacement in the aftermarket. Magnacore makes plug wires for it so I ordered those.
schmuckingham
Once everything was buttoned up I loaded the car on the trailer and took it to Le Gingerbro for the new manifold and downpipe. A few weeks later I get a photo pf this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG_5958_zpslyzmo2my.jpg Then a week after that: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/My%20vehicles/IMG955978_zps6unzefga.jpg Then this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG956106_zpsfepm13wd.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG_6011_zpsi9e8q4gg.jpg Off the car: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/Schmuckingham/IMG_7471_zps7bomkkwk.png
