Zx2guy19
Looking for a good deal on a shotgun for home defense. Truthfully I've always been a hand gun guy and never even shot a shotgun, but since I've been carrying my HG more I'd like to keep the SG ready for home defense. No preferences on what type really. Anyone looking to offload?
wagner
If nobody here has something that is worth the price, check the used racks at the local gun shops. I've seen a few good deals there in the past. Also check ArmsList.
Mojoe
I don't have one for sale, but some things to think about are written below: The easy answers are a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500. Both come in so many configurations you'll likely be confused quickly. I have had both and lean toward the 870 over the 500 largely by the location of the safety and my comfort in employing the weapon. Both function very well and have an aftermarket offering that is just as vast as the option configurations of each model. Both are in a close price range and can be had new from $279 on sale, to $600+ for certain configurations. At that low a range, it is almost worth it to by new. There are many others out there. They will be limited in aftermarket options. Their price will either be so cheap, I'd be scared to shoot it. Or so pricey, I don't think I'm interested. I may suggest looking at a 20 gauge if the lady of the house may use it. I got one for my wife, because the 12 gauge was too heavy and the recoil intimidated her. She will shoot the hell out of the 20 gauge though. Also, if there are other people in other rooms, kids maybe, with the 20 will come less over power and with certain ammo choice, you can reduce the over penetration of going through or past your intended target. Personnel favorite without dropping big $ is. http://www.vanceoutdoors.com/products2.cfm/ID/93027 I picked min up for $389 Versatility of round options and capacity, coupled with light weight, have made this one of my favorite shotties under $500. I blast the hell out of it and butt stroke trees until they fall with it. It's a great club too.
zeitgeist57
I have a Mossberg 500e, which shoots .410 shells. Good thing I hardly shoot it because it's slim pickings for .410 ammunition. Joe is spot-on...definitely look at 20-gauge if you don't want to accidentally shoot through a couple layers of drywall and into a sleeping family-member's body. I call dibs on the .410 when you want to sell it.
El Karacho1647545492
I've had a Moss 500, a Rem 870 and a Benelli Supernova. The Benelli was by far my favorite to shoot and own, the Rem 870 is the most popular, but if I were buying one SG to keep for life, it'd be the Moss 500. They're not as configurable as the Rem 870 in my experience (at least from a cost/benefit perspective), so however you're going to want it (pistol grip, long mag tube, etc) buy it that way rather than expecting to customize it. That also goes for the Benelli. Obviously my experience is anecdotal but I really just liked the fit & finish of the Mossberg over the Remington. As someone else said, safety position is definitely a consideration (I prefered the Mossberg), as is loading. IIRC loading the Mossberg was MUCH easier than loading the Remington, slightly different mechanisms but it's been a long time since I had them. As with any gun, buy whatever's most comfortable for you.

Dharris89
A few months ago I was at Nortons Sporting Goods on the north side of Delaware and they had several used shotguns at very good prices. If you don't mind the drive, it's a neat little gun store. Then after you guy it go across 23 and shoot some clays.

Zx2guy19
Picking up a brand new 12 gauge Mossberg 500 today from a member who PM'd me. Never fired, comes with shells and all. I appreciate everyone's input. For the price I think I'm getting a great deal on what sounds like a great gun.

nurkvinny
Easy to replicate. I bought if off CR a few years back. It actually had more doo-dads hanging off of it, but these things are so simple to modify.

Chief8one
Vances has escort 12 gauge and Stevens 12 gauge both with pistol grip for $160 hard to beat I bought 2. They are not flashy but well built.for the price imo. I didn't see a pistol grip on Vances website for the escort. Think I'll pick up 1-2 escorts tomorrow. The old lady has been mentioning she wants a 12 gauge and she put $150 cap on presents this year. Probably a dumb question, but can you put a pistol grip on one of these? She keeps mentioning that is what she wants. Edited December 22, 2015 by Chief8one
