Hwilli1647545487
I need ~70 full sized ties for a "retaining wall". I don't want to pay $10/per Anyone have any local suggestions?
Rocky31186
Not local but cheap.. found some awhile back for 5/each http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/for/5364500520.html
Hwilli1647545487
I have found them for $2 in Wheeling, but 70 ties is over 15k lbs. Not an easy transport.
nurkvinny
If you find a source and there are more than you need, please keep me in mind. I too am building a "wall". Thanks
cstmg8
No idea what their price is now, but Sutherlands on the southwest side used to carry them. I am sure they would give a discount for an order of 70. Possibly even deliver.
cstmg8
Holy shit, Lowes wants 20 bucks a piece! This might be a silly suggestion, but have you tried calling any of the railroad yards around?
zeitgeist57
I need a few as well...carpenter ants gutted at least 6-8 of them around my patio.

ImUrOBGYN
Quick aside: I made quite a bit of money in the 80's "borrowing" railroad ties and building heavy duty picnic tables among a few other things. To be fair, (and to ease my conscious lol), many of the ties would've been left to rot at this old railroad lot.
RyM3rC
, many of the ties would've been left to rot at this old railroad lot. I know of multiple places within 5 miles of me there are large quantities of RR ties, hundreds of them if not thousands of them just sitting for years. But they're behind fencing on what I assume is RR property. Wouldn't be hard to get to, but good luck navigating the RR red tape to get permission to take them. spankis
As a teenager I did landscaping work and dealt with railroad tie retaining walls several times. I seem to remember them being treated with something very caustic or carcinogenic. Just something to consider. $2 each seems like a great deal. Otherwise, the wood last a long time due to those chemicals. Here's where I used to get mine! lol Probably not worth the trip for you... https://goo.gl/maps/yh5fLUG85UN2
acklac7
I seem to remember them being treated with something very caustic or carcinogenic. Just something to consider. . That something is called creostote, carcenogenic indeed. Fun fact: Raw creostote was dumped straight into the upper Scioto for years back in the early 1900's. The river was so polluted the EPA had to dig an entirely new river bed a mile to the east and permanitely re-route the river.
jeffro
My dad decided to "borrow" some rr toes back in the 80s. The rr police found out and weren't kind to him.

Hwilli1647545487
I can get about 1/2 of what I need per trip. 4 hours per trip starts to negate the cost per tie.
