VW Minivan gets a full INTERIOR Detail - Former Repossessed Vehicle - Yikes!

So Matt aka Turbs3000 here on CR picked up a new to him 2010 VW Minivan aka a Chrysler Town and Country wearing VW Badges and wanted it cleaned up inside.

He got an awesome deal on a 115,000 mile vehicle but the downside is that it was completely trashed inside. It was recently repossessed so go figure. It had several clear signs of abuse.

Looked like a kids baseball team frequently road inside after their games and never changed their clothes or shoes

It clearly had windows and sunroof left open and lots of water and dirt stains

Lots of sprayed soda's and juice from the headliner to the floor.

Overall the only thing going for it was that it appears to have had front floor matts for part of it's life but otherwise, it needed a through cleaning and disinfecting.

Process involved:

  • Steam, steam and more steam. Steam makes easy work of most dirt and grime emulsifying oils and crud so that it can be extracted or wiped away. In this case the steamer was paired with an extractor and a couple dozen MF Towels too.
  • 3 rounds of Ozone treatments, 2hrs each, including a nice cycling of the HVAC to kill any bacteria there.
  • Leather treatment applied

I didn't get any before pics as it was dropped off late in the day and the detail was done in the evening. However, picture a very grimey dirt laden vehicle with several cans of coke sprayed inside. Yeah, it was that bad.

All that really counts is the end result which turned out quite well. Many thanks to Matt and his wife for trusting me with their new ride. Once they swap out some bits and parts from their 09 VW Van he may consider a detail for the outside too. I look forward to turning that like new as well. Until then enjoy the clean and fresh interior!

This doesn't do it much justice as a before photo but it gives you an idea that the car was dirty through and through. He probably pulled a whole box of fruitloops from the seats and the headliner was speckled brown, I never thought it would actually come clean.

Thanks again Tim it's a night and day difference from before.9e7f5246d35cae7e79597e7487978772.jpg

Where are the BEFORE PICTURES, TIM?!?!?

What do you use for a steam machine?

I know, I know, the before pics would have been awesome to have, but it was too late and I was too focused on just getting it in process.

Steamer wise I have a Dupray as my main unit and a McCulloch 1385 as a backup. I use the 1385 inside the house more than on vehicles but it's nice to have both.

haha! speckled is a kind word to use. IMO it looks like the kids had all shook up their cans of soda and let them loose in the vehicle

Glad I could help out Matt and glad the kids are now in a clean ride.

Props to you as usual, Tim! Even in a lighter-abuse situation all of us minivan dads know how dirty these things get after the 100k mark.

I did the Scrubbing Bubbles treatment to our Odyssey interior (plastic, carpet, vinyl/leather seats with leather conditioner afterwards) but seems to me that a good steam/soft brush treatment will remove more oils/dirt without abrasion to surfaces, so long as the steam is not concentrated enough to damage surfaces or loosen adhesives (like headliners).

Steam is HUGE when it comes to cutting through grime and gunk. Way better IMO than any chemicals. I do use a mild APC for spot treatments. With Steam you do have to be careful around electronics and on leather. Even plastics to an extent because they can delaminate or peel. When used properly though, the dirt melts away. This van litterally dripped what looked like root beer from every surface. Yeah....it was that bad. I dumped the extracted water out at the curb

The big benefit to steam is that it absolutely kills germs and removes odors. It can penetrate deep too so it goes farther in both cases than most anything. Extracting gunk after a steamer is far better than without one. Key after is that you can run a steamer over the surface again, then wipe with a white towel to remove any crud brought to the surface and that "wicks" it's way up.
