We're taking the kid to the Imaginary Lizards (Imagine Dragons; I tease her about the name) concert next week in Buffalo. She just turned 13 on Saturday, so this is her bday present. It's at Keybank Center in Buffalo. We're staying at Seneca Resort & Casino for the night. The concert is at 7:30pm on Nov 1st. We're leaving early morning on the 1st and driving up. It's about 5.5 hrs. We plan to get there early enough to do the boat ride in Niagara, get back to the hotel, dry off, get something to eat and go to the concert. We'll probably take a taxi from the hotel to the concert so that we don't have to worry about parking and can be dropped off right in front of the venue. We'll have a few hours the following morning to sight-see or do whatever before we have to drive home. I plan to leave Buffalo no later than 3pm on the 2nd.

I'm looking for ideas as to where the get the best grub and other activities with the limited time that we have there. So, what do you recommend?

You know the Keybank Center is like 20 miles from the Seneca right?

Anyway there is a ton of stuff to do at Canalside, including a Naval park.

We just went to see them in Cinci this past weekend. Great show and while I listen to them and like a lot of their songs, this was the first I had seen them and got my fill of who they are from my kids on the way down. More talented that I expected. Have a great time!

If you have time and have never been, at some point you absolutely must go to the Falls on the Canada side. You're not too far a drive from Buffalo. I grew up in Rochester, about an hour from Buffalo and have been to Buffalo / Niagara Falls more times than I can count... :)

She had cross country that morning and was in the circleville pumpkin show parade that night, otherwise we would have been able to make that one.

Yeah, I know the taxi ride won’t be cheap but it beats having to find a place to park and I can have a few, maybe several bevvies at the concert and not worry about driving back to the hotel. A taxi is much cheaper than a dui!

Anchor bar is the "home" of chicken wings and has a huge Italian style menu. Great place for casual grub. https://www.anchorbar.com/ You should see some nice views with the leaves on the ride up.

Bar Bill is better :)

We were just up last weekend. Many leaves are probably gone by now. It was gorgeous up there last weekend

Bingo, the home of the chicken wing. It is worth it to stop in, pretty good.

I'm assuming I'm going to hit some tolls on the way up. I've never really driven where I have to pay tolls. When I've traveled for work in the past, the rental car would have the auto pass thing. So, how does that work? Do I need exact change? How much should I expect to pay for tolls?

I just drove from Cbus to Lake Gorge last month and passed by Buffalo and Rochester without having to pay a single toll. I just set the GPS to avoid tolls and it added 20 minutes total to an 8 hour drive. For that it's worth it.

Still, if you want to take the toll road, I believe the NYS thruway still takes cash (they did as of a year ago). You don't need exact change, there will be a toll booth that says "Cash" on it and it won't be hard to spot - it usually has the longest line. They do not take credit cards.

here is the NYS thruway toll calculator:

http://www.thruway.ny.gov/travelers/tolls/calc/index.html

when I used to go from NYC to Rochester it used to cost me $20 in tolls, but I don't think you'll need anywhere near that. If I had to guess you'll probably pay about $5 each way but carry some cash just in case - it's always a good idea.

You go through any line that does not have a large EZ-PASS ONLY sign above it that has a green light. Should be between $2.35 and $3.20, I can't remember. You don't need exact change. There will only be 1 service area between the State Line and the end of the tolls (the tolls end before the city, you won't be exiting), so I suggest stopping anywhere in Erie.

Yes you will as soon as your cross into NY on I-90. It is the fastest and easiest way to make it in 5.5 hours. It is exact change. Get an EZPass to make it so much easier.

Got back late last night. Nothing ever goes as planned, but it all worked out. We left late on Wednesday, which didn't give us much time to get checked in to the hotel, drive down to UB campus, catch the train to the arena, with 10 minutes to spare before imagine dragons got on stage.

After the concert, took the train back to UB, drove back to the hotel after getting misdirected multiple times by google maps. The falls were about a 10 minute walk from the hotel, so we walked down in the cold rain thinking we were going to see the falls lit up at night. It was 1:30am and we were told the lights shut off at 2am. We arrived at the falls before 2, but no lights. Come to find out later, the time was just changed to shut off at 1am.

The plan yesterday was to be at the maid of the mist at 10am, opening time. We woke up at 10am. LoL. We got breakfast then went over and rode the boat at the falls. It was much warmer yesterday than Wednesday, so that worked out well. The ride was really neat, and completely recommended for anyone that makes it up that way. Because we woke up late, we opted for a 1/2 day extension on the room. We finally left the hotel around 3pm and went to Anchor Bar for the wings. OMG!! The wings and sauce were amazing. I even brought some home to have for dinner tonight!

We left the restaurant just before rush hour, so it took some time to get out of the city, but once we were on 90W, I got in behind a couple cars, put the pedal down and didn't let up. We stopped once at a rest area just before hitting 271S. Ended up getting home at 10:30 last night.

I'm not one for much driving, so this was a bit of a challenge for me, but I did alright. Even though things didn't go as planned, hit a few snags here and there, we rolled with the punches and had fun. The best part was seeing the kid excited to be at her very first concert and singing along with them for the songs she knew.

I will make it a point to visit next time I drive thru the area. I like my wings heavily sauced, do they go for that style or are they a dry rub/plain wing type place?

Decently sauced, will do extra sauce if ordered. Share a platter of wings with a friend and also get their Beef on Weck. Their stuffed banana peppers are great too. Also, cash only

mmmm....beef on weck...I totally forgot that is a western new york thing. So Good!!!!

I love a good beef on weck. Some places put too much salt on the weck roll though, which is unfortunate. The best ones I have had are Bar Bill, Beef N Barrel in Olean, and Schwabl's in West Seneca.

Fun fact, Buffalo Wild Wings was originally BW3's because it was Buffalo Wild Wings & Weck.
