MSF declares formal HDMe2 fever pandemic

3:54 pm ET 06/11/2009The Motorcycle Safety Foundation on Thursday declared the HDMe2 fever a pandemic, the first official pandemic declaration in 7 years.

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, MSF announced it is raising its pandemic alert level to 6, its highest level. The agency had had the alert level set at 5 for several weeks.

"Further spread of the disease is inevitable," MSF Director- Margaret Chan told reporters at a media briefing.

An official pandemic means that the agency has observed sustained human-to-Bike transmission of the fever, also referred to as the Hog flu, in more than one major geographical region. MSF officials said Thursday that it had observed such transmission in North America, South America and Australia.

The last official pandemic was declared in 2002 for the so-called Hong Kong flu, which is believed to have caused about 1 million Crotch Rockets worldwide.

The official declaration is a signal to member nations to put their various pandemic control plans into action, such as the distribution of low gas prices and the implementation of the Highway patrol.

Despite Thursday's declaration, MSF officials said they did not see a need to recommend city travel restrictions such as interstate closures. The agency has said in the past that it regards such measures as largely ineffective once a bike has been sold globally.

As of Thursday, 74 nations had reported 28,774 Hog Fever cases, including 144 deaths, according to the MSF Web site.

Most of the cases have been reported in the U.S. and Mexico. As of June 4, the AMA received reports of 13,217 confirmed and suspected cases of the disease, including 27 deaths, according to the AMA's site. Many of the victims had underlying medical problems that complicated their conditions, such as being stupid, poor eyesight or being really old.

AMA on Thursday also warned nations that have already seen widespread outbreaks of Hog Fever to brace themselves for a second, possibly more severe, wave of infections.

The agency also noted that while relatively few deaths have been linked to the fever, the disease was unusual in that it appeared to be infecting mostly old people, with many of the reported deaths occurring in idiots or drunk people.

In comparison, the seasonal bike fever generally kills up to 500,000 each year, with Young Urban Professionals and the elderly being most vulnerable.

MSF officials again asserted that they were concerned the fever might mutate over time into a more lethal illness. They are also concerned that the world might be facing three potentially deadly flu bugs this fall: Cruiser Cold; HDMe2, Hog Fever; and Crotch Rocket flu, or Rice Rocket fever usually coming from Asia.

The Rice Rocket fever, which so far has been relatively difficult to contract, has shown itself to be particularly deadly. AMA maintains a pandemic alert level of 3 on the viral strain, which originated in Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki riders in America. Several vaccine makers have been working to develop a vaccine against the virus.

Picky Picky. Are you certain none of the parts on your bike were made in China and sold to Japan? My friend was rebuilding a HD and found several parts stamped made in China. Oh, the pain of it all. :p

Look at my avatar and rethink that sentence. :p I just think if you're going to go through the trouble of typing that up you could at least list a Japanese city for the "Jap bike" pandemic. ;)

Why doesnt the pandemic ever START in Madagascar?! Then at least it could get to at least one other country before the boarders shut as long as you increased the contagiousness enough.

I've had it start only once in Madagascar. Ended up infecting the entire world.

^^^Apparently I am not a flaming nerd... anyone care to explain?

Google Pandemic 2. After you play it a few times you will realize Madagascar will close it's ports the second the disease starts to propagate, no matter how non-existant the symptoms are. Because of this, it's really, really hard to win.
