EagleCock Posted July 20, 2007 Report Share Posted July 20, 2007 COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State Highway Patrol is using single-engine Cessna planes to track speeders from the sky.Fifteen troopers are trained to take off from three airports across the state, 10TV's Laura Cole reported."You may not see troopers clocking your speed, but that doesn't mean they're not out here," said Trooper Scott Hartge.The patrol's mission is to reduce the state's fatal crash rate down to one person per 100 million miles traveled, Cole reported.Troopers said that they are getting more aggressive with the program that started decades ago. One of the prime areas being targeted is Interstate71 in Delaware County. Troopers said that it has recently resembled a speedway more than a highway.The painted lines on highways tell troopers when a driver has traveled mile. Troopers used calibrated stopwatches to time the vehicle from across the quarter mile and determine a driver's speed.Some of the easiest aggressive drivers to track from the sky are tailgaters, Cole reported.Four central Ohio roadways rank among the state's 10 top arrest locations for aggressive driving. They are:--Interstate 270, in Franklin County--Interstate 71, in Delaware County--Interstate 70, in Madison and Licking counties--U.S. Route 23 in Pickaway CountyTroopers in the air radio a patrol officer on the ground, who pulls the drivers over, Cole reported. It is then up to the officer on the ground whether to write a driver up. According to the patrol, the crackdown from the sky is making a difference. John Posted July 21, 2007 Report Share Posted July 21, 2007 you can still speed... just slow down for the 2 miles when you start to see hash marks on the side of the road. and yes, they love to get tailgaters this way, because its something that they really cant stop people for very often because its so hard to spot.
