Marion officer injured in hit-skip crash

Sunday, August 19, 2007 10:22 AM

MARION, Ohio — An off-duty Marion police officer was seriously injured early today when his motorcycle was struck by a hit-skip vehicle, police said.

Officer Cory Winfield, 29, of Marion, was flown to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where he was in serious condition.

Police said Winfield, who had just finished his shift, was riding his motorcycle south on Prospect Street when he was struck by a northbound car near Superior Street at 1:12 a.m.

A motorist followed the car that struck Winfield to a home on Pearl Street and summoned officers, who arrested Joshua Abrams, 20, of Marion.

Abrams was charged with aggravated vehicular assault, driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an injury accident and underage consumption.

The injured officer is the brother of Marion County Deputy Sheriff Brandy Winfield, who was shot and killed while on patrol in 2004. His killer is serving a life prison sentence. Their father, Rick Winfield, is an officer on the Marion police force.

The State Highway Patrol is assisting Marion police in investigating the collision.

You just gotta feel for this guy and his family... they've already been through a lot... Fluckin' drunk drivers piss me off!!!

Of course the way things go around here sometimes, I'll probably be labeled as having some sort of problem with loving cops and apologizing for their shortcomings as fallible beings.. Oh well.

An update that I got:

Just an update because I know the media reports very little of actual facts that really matter....Cory suffered a fractured skull in the back

of his head, a bruise to the front of his brain, a fractured pelvis, and a large gash in his leg. So far they have completed surgery on the hip

and leg.

The brain injury is a wait and see type of thing. They have drilled a hole in his skull to relieve pressure from swelling. He has not regained

consciousness as of yet but did seem to start hearing people talk to him yesterday and move some of his extremities.

Sounds like no helmet was being used........

Yes its terrible that this happened but if you aren't wearing gear then you are going to get the worst that can happen.

IT is just awesome that someone took it on themselfs to follow the drunk to a location so that it wasn't a hit and run.

Hopefully all will be well with him...
