After I got my memorandum title in the mail yesterday, I went straight to the BMV and got my new plate and tags. I installed it and went riding for 30 miles or so. As I pulled up to a stoplight I smelled a burning smell and thought it was the shitty car in front of me. I also sensed that the bike didnt want to roll as easy as it used to at a deadstop. Weird.. So when I got home and parked something metal fell to the ground, this is what I discovered.

Wow, that sucks. It came off the stock mount?

No, the guy who had it before me just used two holes from where the stock mount was and bent his plate at 90 degrees about a half an inch down. So I just took a couple angle brackets and used screws and nuts... no lock washers

Did you remember to request your plate in metric size? I think that might've been your problem. You have a metric bike, you need a metric plate or else it'll fall loose and get caught up like it did. Be sure to request one next time you do to the DMV.

Damn imperial measurement system.

For the record, I rarely use lock washers. If the fastener is tightened properly, the lock washer is pretty much just a flat washer at the point. I learned that in a seminar put on by a nut and bolt company, and they even sold lock washers!
