Other than that, a lot of engine numbers match the frame, and can be checked on a parts web site.

A good parts website will show what range of serial numbers were for each year.

The shop manual often does also.

If it's a 17 digit number, it most likely is the VIN. I don't know what year it started, but modern engine numbers are mostly the same as the frame VIN. Have you considered asking a Kawasaki shop what they can do?

edit: Nope, sorry. From what I see, the engines have either an 8 or a 13 digit number, or both. Not the same.

I don't know if cylinder head part numbers are visible anywhere, but this is the numbers for 2005 and 2006.

edit: I get the impression from the internet that the Kawasaki dealership can look up engine numbers and match them to a frame VIN. That might also let you check for stolen.
