I have done this for the past 2 years, It is a lot of fun and very tiring!

Be prepared to help change bike tires, chains, or call for medical help. All of which I have done!

Pack bedding, because the past 2 years there was none in the dorms. Be prepared for rain, and assholes screaming at you for holding up traffic.

Juli said some of the riders from last year wanted to help again for 2011. She was / is going to email them and copy me on the email.

Were you interested for this 2011 also?

Yup, sounds like just another OR ride.

So how does it work - you just ride the route given or are you given a portion of the route to "patrol" for problems?

The way we have done it the past was to take off at different times so we are spread out all along the course.

Then just make your way along the course helping bike riders as you go. I stopped many times and went back a couple of miles just to double check on people.

There are many support vehicles that travel the course as well that can pretty much rebuild a bike beside the road. So you really won't have to do much.

To be perfectly honest a automatic scooter would not be a bad choice to use, because you will probably never get out of 2nd to third gear lugging your bike for that many hours really sucks! Plus your clutch hand will get one hell of a work out!

So what's the deal with this thing, are we there to encourage the pansy bicyclists to go faster by example (such as: "I'm not even out of first gear, move your ass you sissy!") or through intimidation, in which case should I clothesline the first bicyclist I see as an example to others?

towrope like when you water ski.

more like a sheepherder, when one gets hurt or crippled you stop see if you can help and then move along. when we get to athens, we have fun

All,

I have lead the moto-marshal group for the past 2 years.

I won't be organizing it this year. Too much of a pain in the ass, plus sitting on a sportbike for 20hrs in 2 days hurts a little.

Some pointers for all of you:

1) Keep it professional. Try not to scare any riders if you want to get invited back. Any complaints and it's over.

2) If anyone gets into trouble with a flat tire, chain break or any other emergency, get out the cell phone and call in. You will not be given radios unless you have a radio license. If you are out of cell phone range, you need to ride to get help. A lot of the people you try to help will get frustrated with you because you won't have any tools, so it'll be a good idea to buy your own. Pelotonia staff won't provide you with any.

3) Bring your own sleeping bags and pillows if you plan on staying overnight. You won't be provided with any either if you're going to go the full 180 miles or whatever.

4) If you spot a dangerous intersection with no police support, Park the bike and try to slow traffic and direct the riders through. As many of you know, there was a fatality last year. Remember, rules of the road apply. Riders cannot run every stop sign or traffic light without a police escort.

5) You are not legally allowed to ride on the bike path. I did (pictured) but at your own risk. You could run across a statey that might not be pleased.

shittygsxr, if you have any other questions for me, feel free to pm me. I'll do my best to get you in touch with people who may be able to help you if you need anything, or if you have any questions. I'll also keep my eyes on this thread if anyone has any other questions.

I bet my Concours would make a great Marshall, considering it's one of the styles they use in the Tour De France.

I can help if help is still needed.

Please drop me a PM with the details, and at 54 maybe I'm the old F##k this time.

ATGATT, and ride safe out there.

Greg

I just wanted to give a big thank your to all of you who took the time out of your day today and/or will tomorrow to provide vehicle support to Pelotonia. I didn't meet a single cyclist with anything bad to say about the help provided, and it really was great to see so many motos out there doing anything to help. Got to meet Das Borgen from OR, thanks again for the help, hope your clutch hand recovers from all the constant stop-and-go!

The check presentation will be this Thursday at the LC pavilion tickets are $25 and there will be an open bar, live music and whores de vor.

As a wise man once said "I have spent way more than that on wedding gifts just to get to an open bar"
