This is my front speedo sensor which mounts on the right front fork. It is a magnet sensor that feeds info right to the cluster. The round magnet has multiple cracks and is broken into 4 pieces.

Does anyone know or can speculate as to why this happened?

I don't remember hitting anything and I haven't had my wheel off recently so I know I didn't mess it up.

I was just out riding and looked down and my speedo said zero.

It creates a magnetic field with 2 spots that are not magnetic. When the wheel spins it creates a digital ( on/off ) signal that the cluster can convert to a speed signal based on the non magnetic spots passing over the sensor.

I'm asking if anyone can speculate how to cracked in 2 spots if I didn't hit anything. I can't imagine magnetic getting brittle with time but I'm just guessing

This is actually a common problem. Often the magnet is broken when putting the front rim back on(Tire change). The magnet is a brittle ceramic and easy to break. Best bet is to glue it back together with epoxy or shell out $180. and hope it doesn't break again.

Strange thing is that I haven't had the tire off in hundreds of miles and as I said I don't remember hitting anything.

I've had to shell out the 180 cause I think its too broken to try and rig it
