ReconRat
My Dad has seen one, that size or larger probably. He's a Navy pilot, and was flying a helicopter with crew on anti-sub practice in the Florida Keys. Along one of the coastlines they spotted one, and they compared it's wingspan to a billboard on the nearby highway. It was that wide or a bit more. shadyone
That's awesome. I'm sure there are tons of mega sized animals in the sea. But to come across one is incredible.

ReconRat
do some internet searching sometime. About strange sounds heard underwater in the ocean. There's something loud enough to be heard farther than any other creature, that is big and fast. And nobody has any idea what it is.

gen3flygirl
On a side not manta rays do not use their stingers and they are non poisonous. I would be thrilled if I saw one while diving. Very graceful and peaceful creatures.
Pokey
Yeah I was sad too, I have always been intrigued by rays. I also agree that the odds of it getting killed seem a bit suspicious. Good Lord that thing is HUGE!
baptizo
Man, I really had no idea that they could get so big. I had one with about a 6' wing span swim up towards me while surfing. Freaked me the hell out since I didn't know what it was at first and was like - where is the fin??? I shielded myself with my board until it made an abrupt turn and swam away. Funny how it freaked me out but sharks never did - they always ignored us.
ReconRat
Remember this one from 2008? Alien of the deep? (A squid species.) This one might be somewhat intelligent...It was caught just hanging out and observing the deep water camera gear.http://images.stanzapub.com/readers/2008/11/26/0_21.jpghttp://scienceray.com/biology/marine-biology/discovery-alien-of-the-deep/http://www.ohioriders.net/showthread.php?t=18033&highlight=creature Edited March 17, 2012 by ReconRat
