I quit smoking and other reasons why I signed up for Pelotonia...

Yup. I quit smoking (five days so far) and signed up for the 50-mile Pelotonia ride. Pending training and fundraising, I'm hoping to up that to the 100-mile ride. For me, I couldn't think of better motivation to quit smoking than my son and adding years we'll spend together. Add to that helping fund the research that will one day lead to a cure for cancer, and it's a win win.

For those not familiar with Pelotonia, it's a great organization. The charity itself is sponsor funded, meaning 100% of the money raised by folks like you and I goes directly to cancer research at The James Cancer Research Center.

For my part, I'm cycling 50 (maybe more) miles and trying to raise more than $1200. Even better, my employer will match whatever I raise. Below is the link to my rider page. If you can throw a couple bucks towards my goal, sweet. If not, that's cool too.

For anyone else riding in this year's Pelotonia, post up your rider pages and why you're riding.

Good for you! Most people don't realize how much they take away from their time spent with loved ones each time they light up! :D

You're a good man Casper!

Didn't realize, the routes to Gambier come within a mile or so of my house! If you decide to do one of those routes, let me know, I will find somewhere to heckle you (ok, I'd actually cheer you on!)

I will be sending a few $$ on your page later in the week!

Awesome! I'm hoping to be able to do the 100-mile route. Really depends on how my body does and if I can raise enough money.

That's an awesome reason in itself, right there! That's one of the bigger motivators in me wanting to do something to get into better shape. We have 4 kids, and I can't keep up with any of them after a days work!

Congrats on quitting! Even better getting in shape and riding!

I suffer some shortness of breath that makes the century mark nearly impossible, but I've still been riding and training as if someday I'll do it. I mostly ride mountain bikes, but someday I hope to do the pelo!

Is there actually a bike type restriction?? I ride a mountain bike with semi-slick road tires,

road in the American Diabetes Tour de Cure a couple times with it.

There were lots of people riding mountain bikes in those rides.

If you break down, tell the moto escort to identify you to the dispatch center, I'll make sure I send out the choppah instead of the piddly mech van to get you on your way. :)

no restriction, ride whatever you want. Most people find it easier to do 100+ miles on a road bike though

Congrats on quitting.. I've never stuck a cig in my mouth.. Not sure why anyone would start, or anyone wouldn't quit.. Shit is nasty..

I've lost my grandpa from it, and my uncle only has a few weeks left because of it.. You made the best decision of your life, because it's a HORRIBLE way to die.. Kudos to you sir!

Congratulations on quitting! Keep reminding yourself of your motivation to quit and it'll help you get through these first couple weeks.

I rode the 100 miler last year, going for 180 this year, and I ride for my mother who has now beat two different types of cancer, and for my uncle and grandfather who have lost the battle. I ride for all our loved ones who have been or will be affected by this terrible disease.

Casper, if you or anyone else on here riding wants to do some training rides together I think it would be a lot of fun. Lots of good riding trails and roads around Columbus, and I ride nearly every weekend so I can meet up anytime. If you have any questions about how to prepare I can try to help too, as before last year I hadn't rode a bike in probably 10 years, so I had to figure out a good schedule and such to prepare myself for the 100.

Cheers to you for joining the cause and for your own triumph in kicking the smoking, and if I don't talk to you beforehand, I'll see you out there on the road August 11.

Ross and I usually ride every saturday and sometimes during lunch so let us know if you would like to tag along or maybe we can join you

For many riders their place of employment has tons of fundraisers, events ect but if there is anyone on here that does not have that available to them feel free to check out the following resources.

Consistent with my reputation here it is better if you don't know me or acknowledge that you do.

No restriction on bikes on the Pelotonia. I meant my mountain bike is geared and set up for the trails, and would be brutal on a distance road ride. Not that I'm physically up to it anyway...I can ride like hell for a couple hours, but long strenuous cardio makes my lungs spasm and I start to hyperventilate. I've been doing therapy for it but I'm not where I need to be yet.
