home audio/speaker/surround help

Well I have been using the xbox version surround sound (see here) for a few years and wanting to upgrade. The bass sounds amazing but don't really hear much from the other speakers. I am wanting to switch to a 3.1 setup with some decently sized house speakers. Should I just get some speakers to use with my current setup? I don't know much about this but I don't think it would have enough power to the larger surround speakers. Price range is a couple hundred

Something like this would be sweet

I've never used a sub with this setup as I never really thought it needed it if you equalize it right. It has plenty of connections for more speakers as well as a sub out I believe. Its a nice entry level budget setup, I just don't have the space for the large speakers where I've moved so I'm wanting to sell to get some bookshelf speakers
