redkow97 Posted September 30, 2012 Report Share Posted September 30, 2012 I can't find a honda 599 to save my life, so I'm toying with the idea of making my own.the two biggest obstacles to doing so are:- hiding all the wiring behind the gauges of a 'modern' sportbike- what to do about ram-air tubes?any suggestions?The idea would be to end up with a bike that looks similar to a first generation naked SV650, except it will likely be an I-4 honda instead...I will buy a wrecked race lower and cut it down a bit so I can still race the bike if I want to, and run numbers there. Hide under other stuff or hold with mount clips. Cheapest if found somewhere like Amazon in 25, 50 or 100 foot rolls. Some people sell it really cheap. Those are sweet looking Honda's.Totally agree, but they're not cheap.The idea is to pick up an inexpensive bike, and then sell off some fairings to finance the "599" look.I will certainly take apart whatever I buy to see how it all goes together, but I'm not going to commit to actually making a fighter project until I'm confident I can do it WELL.Something tells me that nothing I do will ever look as good as the 599 or a naked SV... There will just be hoses and coolant overflow tanks in places I don't want them to be seen. You can relocate some of that stuff, but it's always going to have been designed to be hidden behind fairings. Posted September 30, 2012 Report Share Posted September 30, 2012 Use an anodized aluminum water bottle, practice hand grenade or jagermeister bottle for the overflow (it just has to hold water, don't constrain yourself to stock jugs, think outside the box!), shitcan the stock clocks and wire in a vapor digi gauge. Or be gangster and forget the tac (rev limiter will tell you 'when') build your own simple idiot light cluster and use a bicycle Speedo. Wiring can be hid behind a Jason mask zip-tied to the cluster...unless you're going for that clean, factory 'street fighter' look.... Posted September 30, 2012 Report Share Posted September 30, 2012 You can get an old Honda cb headlight, bucket, bezel etc for like &60 if you don't care how ugly it is, black out the rings and repaint the bucket. The old ones use a sealed beam but you can get a replacement lens/reflector that will accept an h4 bulb. Still leaves a ton of room inside the bucket for wires. Only problem I can see is if you have inverted forks you're gonna have trouble finding some mounting ears for the bucket, may have to custom fab something.
