  1. This was a good read, thanks for that. Couple things in there that might help me out a bit more. I actually have gained more interest in my camera since I picked up my 430ex. I was completely frustrated with low light, indoor photos until I got a flash that I was able to utilize without firing directly on the subject.
  2. That's exactly the reason I'm leaning towards Moton's for my next car, their current involvement in the model / brand is above and beyond the others. AST only has one offering for the chassis I'm looking to buy and it's not techically for the Model that I'm looking at despite the similarities between them. Despite re-assurance from AST I'm worried things like shock length might be an issue when the two models have drasitcally different ride heights, upright geometry, etc from the factory. It'd be like buying a coilover designed for a 330 to put on your M3. Sure it would work, but is it optimal on the M3? If I was re-doing the suspension on my M3 I'd be all over the AST's though. That's what got me looking at them in the first place was all the great feedback from the M3 guys.
  3. How's the learning curve been with upgrading to two way over single adjustable? I'm eyeing AST 5100's for my next car but I'm guessing I'll upgrade them to 5200's at some point and when you get to that cost level it's hard not to look at other options like Motons in the first place. The 5100's are a nice way to get stuff on the car at a reasonable cost initially though I was just shocked at the 2K price tag to upgrade them after the fact. Andy
  4. FWIW I told them to check out the board to see about a potential sponsorship opportunity. You might be seeing their presence here soon.
  5. This post couldn't have been more timely. After nearly 8 years of use I finally had one of my Philips D2s bulbs go out on me and I've been looking for a replacement. I might actually go the cheaper route with his no-name bulb just because at this point with nearly 190k miles on the car I'm not sure how much more life it has left in it. Zipped over to Westerville and picked up a set of bulbs and had them in the car same night. Great service, friendly guys (Nate and Matt) and I couldn't be happier. I suggested they come give CR a look as a potential new sponsor. Hope to see their presence here soon. Andy
  6. Sigh....makes me miss my old car http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z39/crossle_sean/DSC02324.jpg
  7. That 7.5" pad is variable contact so the surface area working a flat surface is actually smaller than a 6" flat pad. I'll give you one of my old ones if you want to try for yourself though
  8. Being a smarter consumer and saving money. I say No though. Turbo / big HP cars are cool but are fragile which is what I thought you were trying to get away from. If you're just looking for a change and this floats your boat then go for it.
  9. I'm out. Tirerack is backordered on the rotor blank I was going to buy and nobody else can get me them in time to be installed unless I pay an insane amount for shipping. ...and i was just there last weekend too so I'll live. you guys enjoy.
  10. HT-10's on OEM euro rotors The euro rotors are good for the street but eat pads like nothing else, combine that with the fact my car is fully optioned, full weight and has no cooling. I haven't really tracked the M3 in a few years and forgot how quickly it goes through stuff at full weight, esp now that I've grown even more as a driver. I think I'm going to go back to standard rotor blanks and either HT-14's or PFC 06's. I'd rock the PFC rotors but I really intend on tracking the M3 one or two more times until I can get a replacement for the Porsche so I don't want to drop a ton of money into it. I was running with PCA this past weekend. I've done most of my track stuff with them all the way back to auto-x with my father in his 944. I will likely be instructing with them next year as well. Andy
  11. Great car. Love the face-lifted E46's. Stance and wheels really finish off the look.
  12. PC's don't really have enough power to run a pad any bigger than 6" effectively. I think 8" is about as big as pads go but they're generally for rotary use only. A PC would bog down pretty badly with an 8" pad.
  13. I was holding out hope I'd be able to make it...but after wearing a brand new set of Hawk race pads down to the backing plate and cracking a front rotor in two days this past weekend I won't have the car turned around in time for this. Time for some brake cooling or weight reduction.
  14. Basically...You can make them look better by wetsanding and knocking down the sharp edges then polishing, but it'll only be marginally better.
  15. Can you feel them with your fingernail...if so they won't go away Scratch-x is about as agressive of a polish / compound that you'd want to use by hand. More agressive products will only marr the crap out of the finishe if not used with a machine. Andy
  16. There's something I absolutely love about bagged dually's http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4100/4903680990_080b1b76d0_b.jpg
  17. I've gotta agree here. C6Z's are *cheap* now (relatively speaking), make great power and do it in a very reliable and fun package. If I wasn't soo hung up on my euro-trash I'd own one already. Andy
  18. M96's are all wet sump. Dump in 10 quarts and you're done.
  19. The M96 blocks in those cars have a horrible rear main seal design. Most of them leaked or will leak. I was fortunate enough to look for and find a car with no history of leaks when I bought my 996. Seems like if they leak once, they'll continually develop leaks. There's a new design seal that comes out about once a year that's supposed to be updated and better and never fixes it. Did you have a PPI done prior to buying? IF I were you, I'd take it to a place that knows porsches (Auto Assets in Powel is a good one), ask them to inspect the seal to determine if it's leaking and if it is indeed wet, ask Byers to replace the seal for you. To get a basic guestimate on your own is the leak at the center of the motor or more near the tires? You'll see the dripping in the center where the motor and tranny come together if it's an RMS. It's not uncommon to have valve cover leaks in those motors with some miles on them (my car had a slight drip from the valve covers) but you'll see those drips at the outer most extremeties of the motor near the tires. If the RMS is starting to leak, when that seal goes bad it'll dump all the oil in a hurry eventually if you don't address it. Otherwise they're pretty well sealed up motors. I can't see any leaks developing from just overfilling it with oil. Andy p.s. Don't let the RMS deal scare you away from the car though. They're amazing cars, truely a dream to drive. The RMS issue is just a bit of the thorn inthe side with ownership but the rest of the car will make you quickly forget about it.
  20. +1. Based on your updated post I think that a Drivers Education event is the ticket for your next stage of learning. PCA, BMWCCA, NASA and I'm sure there's even a corvette club out there and all offer great platforms for beginners to advacned students. Even the Mid Ohio school itself wouldn't be a bad option.
  21. I've heard nothing but good things about all of them but never done any myself. Mainly because none of them seem to be within reasonable distance. Are you looking to improve your driving or are you looking to learn race craft? If you're just looking to take your personal driving to the next level it's cheaper (though not by much) to hire a professional driving coach for a day. Most groups will allow this even in a DE format with prior approval but doing so in an open lapping day format is the best way to get the most for your money. If you're looking to learn race craft one of the big name schools is probably better. Andy
  22. I've already got my "That's How I drive...Flatout" t-shirt. I found the original rather entertaining. http://949racing.com/flat_out_t_shirt.aspx
  23. If you scrounge around for deals on the internet you can generally find the gallons for about $75-85 + shipping. I think the last gallon I ordered was $86 shipped.
