  1. To get it tagged, I had to take it to a "truck" scale and get it weighed; it showed "0" on their "official" scale! Had them write 80lbs on the weigh slip. I've never actually weighed it, but I think 80lbs is about right. It will easily hold a tent, 2 sleeping bags, 2 sets of extra gear (except helmets), shoes, tools, etc. Can even strap a couple folding chairs to the top if desired. If I were to build another I would use a different box. This one is not watertight so I pack stuff in w/p bags.
  2. Does having been a Boy Scout count as military experience?? Or possibly son of a sailor?? If so, I'm in!
  3. I built my own one-wheeler that I have pulled a couple thousand miles. Used a plastic "job box", 8" trailer wheel, bicycle shock, LED lights and a GoldWing U-joint for the coupler. Although not the most "elegant" looking thing, it's quite functional. Being a one-wheeler, it leans with the bike. It's no wider than the bike so you don't have to change the way you ride where wider standard trailers dictate riding in the center of the lane. Properly loaded, you barely know it's behind you, even in the twisties! Photobucket of the build HERE.
  4. I haven't posted on here in a long while, but saw the cross-post on the "other" Ohio site. Thought I would chime in. There is a KOA on 664, North of Old Man's Cave. Nice place but very "family oriented". They have RV and tent sites, "camping cabins" and some "deluxe cabins". Also have a pool and a pavilion. Consider Lake Hope State Park if you are looking to camp or get a cabin; not far from Hocking Hills/Nelsonville/Logan and the roads to/from are "Epic"! In June I host ST-Owner's "OH-STOC" at LHSP; though dining options are slim (better now that the Lake Hope Lodge has reopened) area roads are some of the best in the state! Hocking Hills shouldn't be too crowded this early in the year, but I would get out of the area early, there are too many other, much less traveled roads in SE Ohio to ride! LOTS of excellent asphalt snakes in the area. I have several 200-250mile loops worked up, let me know if you are interested.
  5. I've been taking my now 12yr old daughter with me since she was 8. We've done 350 mile days numerous times. We ride ATGATT and utilize an intercom. That said, it is important to consider each child separately. No two are the same. I have had 15 year olds on back that I would not ride again, and I've had 6 year olds that are great passengers; it all depends. The fact that the writer of the article in the OP states: " But they can also be dangerous and are known for their ability to kill and maim, even the most skilled riders. A motorcycle is no place for a 10-year-old." is of great concern! Obviously this safety maven has no problem cramming her views down the throats of others.... How many children are maimed or killed EVERY YEAR while riding in the back of the family mini-van?? MAYBE we should OUTLAW transporting children in vehicles completely because it is so inherently dangerous!! Personally I don't like to see youngsters on the back of motorcycles with an ill-fitting open-face helmet, T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops and will not consider putting a passenger on my bike geared up in this manner, but that's MY decision. Hell, mom and dad will pay big bucks for the uniform, cleats, chin guards, cup, etc so Johnny can play soccer but make little or no effort to protect their child while on the back of the MC??? WUWT?? In the end it's about personal choices. I CHOOSE to ride a motorcycle. I CHOOSE to ride ATGATT. I CHOOSE to teach my daughter about the dangers of both riding in a car AND on a motorcycle and we CHOOSE to accept the risks of MC riding. I also CHOOSE to not read any more crap from Suzanne Murray....
  6. Biggest concern with salvage bikes is how bad was it damaged to begin with. If it's a bike that hit a car/curb/wall and the forks were bent, then the frame was probably also damaged and to me, that's a No-no. If it was flopped around on it's side(s) and the damage was mostly cosmetic, I have no problem buying it (if properly repaired) You may want to document the repair process, showing pictures of before/during/after along with receipts for any parts (new or used) and materials that you purchased. It might also help the sale if you put some seat time on it; knowing that the bike is performing OK would make it easier to sell than saying "There it is, I fixed it". Lots of variables there....
  7. Wow, sorry to hear about this. Thoughts and prayers to all involved.
  8. Just ordered some insoles Tuesday, should be here in time for the Moonshine Lunch Run!! Leaving early Friday a.m., return Sunday.
  9. Yep, rode today. I noticed $3.65/gal gas..... Chevy Suburban 2500 6.0 V8 = 13mpg Honda ST1100 = 40-45mpg I'll be riding every chance I get! And check out Warm-n-Safe for your heated gear needs
  10. Thoughts and prayers headed your way! It's amazing what modern medicine can do!

  15. You could GIVE it to me; I'll take real good care of it!!
  16. I need to have my dad take this! He'd probably score 100%. Me, I got 6 too....
  17. FirstGear HT II overpants and a TourMaster Transition II jacket are what I use for commuting and 3 season riding; they're too hot for summer use. FirstGear Mesh Tek jacket and pants for when it's hot (but not to commute). Good gear is an investment in you comfort and protection. It will also extend your "riding season". And don't think that because you only ride 15miles to work that you don't need it. After all, how many accidents do you see in that 15miles? And most accidents happen within 5 miles of home. I don't want to come off as a gear Nazi, but I've bounced my butt off the pavement (both with and without gear) more than I want to admit, and not once was it planned! I'd rather have the gear on than off should that happen again!! There's LOTS of gear available and the price is coming down while quality is going up! And there's always used gear being sold too; this gives you an opportunity to try things without too much expense. And heated gear is the cat's meow!
  18. I'll play: 93 Honda ST1100, 130K miles, MODS: 40amp alternator upgrade, 3 windshields (93stock, 96stock, Rifle +4 tall) 3 seats (stock, Corbin, Travelcade Gel), fork brace, Progressive Suspension front springs/rear shock, Audiovox CCS100 Cruise Control, Lowrance iWay 500C GPS, Heli-bars, Hondaline small top box, Classic Industries trailer hitch, Whelen TIR3 LED flashing brake light, FIAMM horns, K&N filter, PAIR system (air pump) removed, AutoCom intercom, home-built one-wheeled trailer Likes: Was cheap when purchased used, and insurance is reasonable. UBER reliable!! 7.5Gal fuel tank/300mile range 1gal oil capacity/8K miles between changes Handles decent for as big/heavy as it is; well planted in turns Great for 2-up! V4 Engine is smooth as silk, will run triple-digits all day long. Decent power and torque Handles well even at parking lot speed, well balanced. Has "Tip over wings" for the inevitable tip overs; little or no damage if dropped. Excellent weather protection Not too hot in the summer Outstanding owner following on numerous forums Panniers will hold a full-faced helmet Dislikes: 740# + wet weight Short tire life, 8K rear/12-15K front Top-heavy! While pushing her about, once she leans more than a few degrees, she's goin' down! Have you ever had to pick up a 700+# motorcycle? Brakes could be better Can be a hand-full in cross winds "Rarer" Honda, most techs have never worked on them. She needs a paint job! Still trying to find the "right" seat. Need $$ for Russel or Ron Meyer... Can never find 6th gear (it's a 5 speed, dummy!) Good thing it's not 1" taller in the saddle! Lots of tupperware to pull to do most any maintenance. All-in-all the ST1100 is a great bike! I would buy another in a heart beat. I prefer it to the ST1300. I use it as my commuter to work, for weekend runs through S/E Ohio area, and a few longer trips. I can load up the trailer with the camping gear, put the wife or daughter on back and take off for weekend trips with ease and confidence.
  19. In '84 I saw one of the 650s at Rarden Honda, with .6 mile on it......crashed! Yamaha had the Seca 650 Turbo; I got to ride one of those! Typically you would ride the rear brake and keep the revs up (turbo spinning) so when you hit the throttle and let off the brake it took off like a shot!! As with most of the bikes back then, they had much more "GO" than "STOP". Cool bikes!
  20. "We intend to hold all responsible parties accountable" was the words of her "Lawyer". I guess she is so irresponsible that she doesn't have to be held accountable for her complete and total lack of intelligence...
  21. The 250 Ninja is a great starter bike, as well as the Rebel and 250 Night Hawk. Might I suggest something like an XR100 or TTR125 dirt bike? Small dirt bikes are great to learn on, you just need a field or a few easy trails to start with. They don't mind being dropped and are light enough that most folks can easily pick them up. All the controls are the same, plus you may learn a bit of control when riding in slippery or loose surface conditions. Not to mention that dirt biking is just a hoot!!
  22. Hey, it's Passinthru!! I too am a noob here. See ya round!
  23. S-I-Repair is (was) for Systems Integration & Repairs, a computer service company that I owned and operated. I just kept the handle.... I DO work on Hondas, and just about any thing else; but not professionally.
  24. Thanks for the welcomes, all! Good eye! Indeed it is the "Black Stig". You will see several versions of him as I change his "face" from time to time. Some are even more "hoaky" than this one!
