  1. I am probably the odd man on this, but the idea of road enduros sounds too much like work. Last thing I wanna do on a nice adventure ride through beautiful back roads is watch my speed and try to read a shitty little route sheet.

    +1

  2. As someone who lives in the country I say Pot holes rock! As I listen to the nut case in Cleveland who parked her car in the street to protect others from a "bad pothole". Here's an idea, slow down, pay attention to the road and stop tailgating.

I say we need more dirt roads in Ohio. The state would save so much money on salt and road crews they could cut our taxes. Plus it is easy to repair a dirt road, just add more dirt and smooth it out with a grader.

On a personal note I'd be happier because the loud ass Harleys would be replaced with the far more usefull dual sport bikes. :D

Ummm - NO! Make city roads as smooth as glass and keep the citiots in the city. You really want all these guys following you around reving their loud dual sports? :wtf:

And the only other person replying owns a Vstrom. Hmmmmmmm

Yeah, but he sold his "real" dual sport bike. :D;)

  3. Evidently the hot setup for a Suzuki DR650 is to replace the heavy stock muffler with one from a '01 or '02 GSXR1000. If you have one cheap, please let me know. I'm not too worried about cosmetics as long as it's sound.

I may also consider a can from a '01-'02 750 or 600. They are not as light or free-flowing, but still better than stock.

    Thanks.

  4. Not much more than a good running GS500.

I love the look of the V7, but I think you could probably build something just as good, and probably a bit faster for about half the money...

Take an old CB750 and start hacking away. Won't cost you $8k, it'll be ONE of a kind with much more plentiful parts. almost 20 more hp, and with all the weight you're likely to cut off, I bet it gets up and goes better than the V7...

The only thing I like better about the V7 is the torquey twin.

You're both right that there are plenty of cheaper, lighter, faster bikes out there. But you can't compare reving the crap out of a GS500 to just twisting the V7 throttle at 2800 rpm and having 45 ft/lbs on tap. Totally different riding style. And that CB750 is still going to be a top heavy beast - not to mention being a wailing 4-banger - that won't be nearly as light and agile as the V7.

And neither will look like a Guzzi, or sound like a Guzzi, or ride like the Guzzi.

  5. Now I know. What models/years are the new lighter V7 block used on?

nm... old heavy engine was back in the 70s.

This is just from memory, so the years may be off a little, but the small block was developed in the late 70s and first appeared in the US as a 500cc machine in 79 or 80. It was updated to a 650 a few years later as the V65SP.

A modern version with FI was released around 2004 as the 750 Breva (standard) and 750 Nevada (cruiser). The modern V7 Classic or Cafe is basically a 750 Breva with different bodywork.

All the small blocks share many driveline components with the major differences being displacement or cosmetics (tank, seat, pegs, etc.)

  6. V7 cafe classic claims 407 lbs dry / 439 lbs wet & 47.6hp

    V7 cafe sport claims 539 lbs & 70hp

Just to clarify: The modern V7 is based on the small block and is the lighter of the two here. The original V7 is from the early 70s and is the heavier large block.

  7. I've had a few Guzzis and currently am in the process of putting one back on the road. The new V7 is a small block and weighs about 400 lbs. Like beezer said - it has a very flat torque curve so you can keep a very enjoyable pace through the twisties with just the throttle.

Only downside is that dealers are few and far between. If you're the type who takes your bike to the dealer for every little thing then you may be disappointed. I've heard there is a good dealer in Stubenville - Speaker's Cycles. The dealer in Mt. Vernon dropped Guzzi. I test rode a V11 there a few years ago and the salesman told me that they were dropping the brand.

    Good luck!

  8. That'd been sweet back in the day. Could you tow a boat with it? j/k

No, but I built a 12' row boat and had to take it to Portsmouth for inspection. I turned it upside down and strapped it to the top of my roof. You should have seen all the other drivers snapping their necks trying to get a look at the stupid hillbilly with a boat on top of his crappy car.
