  1. Thought I'd say hi. I live in Hilliard and just bought a 06 CBR 600RR, Would love to hear some experienced riders thoughts.

Congrats and welcome to riding. 2 hours is not a whole lot of experience on a motorcycle to be thinking about doing a trip. Please sign up for a MSF course and get some basic training. Also if you can bum some time on a dirt bike go for that. Riding is a skill and it takes time and practice to get anywhere near to being a decent rider.

Keep a cool head and keep the rubber side down. Good luck.

  2. Hey, that bike looks familiar. Nice find! -Your finding out why I'm addicted to viffers. -

---------- On the 5th gens, a lot of people find the suspension soft and thats the first upgrade to go.

    - Since you have a '98, the achilies heel of the thing is the R/R. Check to see if its the original one or its been replaced. Those suckers die at about 13 - 15k miles. Save your pennies for a replacement - it will crap out, guarenteed. Also, Its worth while to spend 40 bucks and get a upgrade hardness from this guy.. (UPDATED LINK ---- http://www.wiremybike.com/ --)

He's kinda the VFR electrical guru.

Congrats, feel free to PM me if you have any questions on the '98. I probly have changed, attacked damn near everything on the bike.

  3. Ok.....So I met the buyer of my RC51 today at the Ohio Michigan border as he was driving down from the Upper Peninsula area. I had gotten to the rest area about 30 minutes early so I surfed the web a bit on my phone and kept going back to that VFR in Columbus. I decided that was the bike I wanted. I decided I preferred the pre Vtec model due to the cheaper maintenance costs and no abruptness when the vtec kicks in and out.

So after the buyer shows up we get his trailer loaded up and he hands me a wad of 100's. I was now a buyer :)

On the way home I figured I may as well run by Honda East in Toledo as it is ALMOST on the way home. I stroll in there and ask "Do you have any Gen 5 VFR's? He gave me a blank look...... So I said do you have any clean used 98-02 VFR's and he says matter of fact we just traded one in a few days ago. He shows me to there used bike building and there sits an almost immaculate bright red 98 VFR800 F.I. with a Two Bros pipe. After a quick inspection I noticed that the bike had brand new Sportmax tires and fresh oil change. I kept thinking this was just meant to be.....here I was with money in hand and the bike was lusting after just happened to fall in my lap with a deal better than anything I have seen on Ebay or Craigslist. 30 minutes after getting there I was loaded up and heading home. The salesman said it was his quickest sale ever.

Ill get snap a few picks tomorrow.....

LOL - very cool... the '98s and '99s are the most coveted 5th gens. Congrats!

  4. So I am looking at bikes to replace the RC. My main object of desire right now is the VFR800 from 1999 through 2006. I am also looking at Triumph Sprints.

So far these are my two primary choices. Anyone have any other bikes of this type that they can personally recommend??

I want a sporty bike with good wind protection and comfortable ergo's. What says you Ohio Riders......

I'm obviously biased but grab a 5th gen vfr800 (98 - 01). It a great all around bike. Good for burning twists and then heading for West Virginia for a few days and then back without needing a chiropractor. Its got the gear driven cams so no hassles with the 6th gens sub par cam chain design and no extra tunning needed to smooth out and screw with the vtec. - The V4 sound with a pipe is incredible! Single sided swingarm is there to show off the wheel and it drops off in 5 minute with a lug wrench for tire changes. Engine is bullet proof. Wide mid range power with a good hit on top. If that isnt enuff for ya, there's a super charger kit out there that will boost it to 165hp.

I have done quite a few mods, mostly with brakes and suspension - RC51 brakes with Traxxion Dynamics fork mods and have a Penske shock in the rear. NICE!

    Heres a pic....

  5. I'm attempting once more (maybe twice) to get my girlfriend on the back of the cbr. If she doesn't go for it, I may have to think about getting a slightly more passenger friendly bike. I do love the cbr, way more than the Harley I had before it, but I'd rather have a bike that she's not scared to hop on the back of and ride to dinner. I guess at this point, it's just a matter of priorities, and having a bike we can both enjoy, however infrequently it may be, just kinda trumps a bike that I love, and she resents.

Any advice on convincing her that a cbr is just as comfortable for the 3 miles at a time that she rides? 3 miles isn't an exaggeration, either. Her longest ride on the Harley was about 5. She likes it, and has made many comments about how she misses it, but isn't comfortable on the cbr, even when it's not moving.

Harley ride only 5 miles? Sounds like she is just not a bike girl type. If their not into it, their not into it. My ex was that way. I begged her often to come ride with me. When she did, she could only stand 15 minutes and then wanted to go home. Sooner or later it was, screw this, I'm going riding for a long day. Then it was, GF bitching I'm spending more time riding than paying attension to her. Finally a fight - she yells, " you love that motorcycle more than you love me!" My answer - "well, effen absolutely!". She storms outta my house, never to be seen again. Bye GF....;)

  6. really? I love mine...they work really well.

My roots are in motocross so I am used to being able to go front only or rear only or both. I also didnt like that when you touched the rear pedal you would get some front fork dip. So in the shit can they went. No regretts. -- Admittedly, if the bike was a big ass touring bike I would keep them.

  7. THIS!!!! I came here to mention this. Everyone edit your posts with any mods you have done to your bikes! Small things can make a BIG difference. Seats, sprockets, suspension etc. can really change the feel of a bike. I'll post about mine later though hahaha.

Looking at the likes/dislikes I wrote, its really the same with or without the mods. The except for the brake work, the stuff I changed is fairly standard upgrades anyhoo.

Ok - the stockish springs are a bit soft and I dont like linked brakes.

  8. Ahhh' date=' doesn't you pc have to be on also in order to use skype, and don't you have to use a funky headset.

MJ is $1.66 a month ($19.95/yr), its unlimited and it uses a regular phone, has voicemail AND 911 works thru it. Skype doesn't support 911.

So tell me whats the better value?

Also, just remembered something else, MJ can go with you and can be simply installed on any other pc if need be.

MJ also provides you a local phone number, not sure if Skype does that.[/quote']

We were thinking of getting it to replace out home phone.

We never use it & 99% of the calls are people selling shit or wanting us to donate money for other shit so even if the PC is not on & we don't get a call it's no biggie.

For making most calls we have the cell phones & anyone that calls us that we want to speak to calls them & never the home phone anyway.

Sounds like it may be worth doing, $39.95 for the first year (including the device & a year of service) the $19.95 per year after that sounds like it will work for us.

    Thanks all

Both are fairly cheap so I guess its mostly up to what you are after, seems like both are a good way to go. I wanted to ditch the hardwire but still have something I could call with for a longish conversations and not burn cell phone minutes. The phone solitcitors were driving me nutz. So, for me the Skype is on only when I want it on. No idiot callers coming in. I did get a lite weight 20 buck headset for the skype, no big deal there. I like that its software based, with no hardware to worry about. Download it on any PC.

The way its going, the cell is the primary phone - I'm probly 80% cell calls and 20% skype calls.

  9. I looked into it. You have to have you PC on 24/7 if you want somebody to call you. I suppose it fits a niche, but I have gone to Skype at $2.99 a month. Its totally anonymous and you have unlimited time. If somebody wants to call me I give them my cell. - I have no hardwire at all.
