  1. "Walking nicely on a leash is baby steps. You can't build Rome in a day." Ummm, no, but most dogs should be able to walk on a leash without pulling in a day. There are always exceptions but this guy seems to be taking something that can be done in a couple hours and making it a long process.

I am trying to think of a dog I trained in the past that took longer than a few hours tops to learn how to properly walk on a loose leash and am coming up blank.

Obviously changing environments and distractions up will change the dynamics, but it just seems like this guy takes the scenic route so to speak as opposed to just getting there and moving on to other important things.

Like i said, he's very froufrou about it.. but I believe that training isn't something that once you learn it, you never have to work on it again. Betty will always be a work in progress with leashes. She just lets that little hound mind take over and wants to forget everything we work on.

Beatrice on the other hand. I dont even have to hold her leash. She stays perfectly at my side, constantly visually checking in, sitting when i stop.

    Betty has been a challenge.

  2. 1.) Dogs get equipment smart. A lot of dogs I see that haven't been properly trained since puppyhood learn very quickly that they only have to listen when a certain piece of equipment is put on. "I have to mind when the leash is on, but when the leash isn;t there, I can do wtf I want." You can get around this, but it takes consistency and work.

2.) Most equipment I see on dogs is being used incorrectly, whether its prong collars, slip chains, e-collars, etc.

    Exactly.

training is EVERY DAY. All walks for us are a training exercise. We practice sitting politely while others walk by especially those with dogs, We practice focusing on me, Some days the walks are 3 miles, some days they are up and down my street, but they are always about 30-40 minutes.

The Gentle Leader on Betty allowed us to actually work with her on walks, but I have zero plans to make it a long-term training tool.

I was spoiled with my three other dogs being so good on leashes.

There are classes on Loose Leash walking at PosiDogs iirc. You may want to look into them. They are good way to bond with your dog and are pretty fun.

  3. Having my own little drama queen on a leash has lead me to remind my self that a hound has a very different sense of walking.

We had to switch to a gentle leader for her and it's been night and day - however- we work with her on training g almost every day and are almost back to a loose leash walking.

My street is only my 5 houses long and there are days we never even leave the street.

We walk with a short leash and her at my side. As soon as she starts ignoring my corrections I just abruptly turn and walk the other direction. She has started checking in with my visually, and loose leash walking. It's still a battle some days as she's a stubborn fox hound as well.

    Every day we train.

    Every single day.

This is the farthest i allow her in front of me before I turn the other way.

Retractable leases are unsafe peices of crap.

    Please get a real leash.

I had a foster over this weekend start showing signs of Parvo Virus. Parvo is a potentially deadly disease to young dogs and its VERY fast spreading. Owen had to be hospitalized and is now on 3 medications to help keep him from dying. It is treatable when caught early. Thankfully i recognized signs of the illness and we got him to Rascal quickly.

Owens hospital bills have come in at a tune of about $1300. One of the reasons for Rescue Run is to help cover care of the animals we take in.

I am setting my fundraising goal at $1000 and would appreciate any donations you can offer, and hope you will join us in this great event!

  5. We are seeking a Foster home/ Furrever home for this Boy.

    Willie Nelson

He is special needs due to him needed very slow introductions however he is a favorite at the training facility he is at. I have not met him, but i am eager to find a way to get him into a home ASAP.

Willie is a handsome boy who is good with kids, dogs, and cats! He has been going to doggie daycare the last couple months and loves it! He is a very sweet boy that loves to snuggle. He will lay nicely on his dog bed but would prefer to lay right beside you on the couch or at the end of your bed.

He gets along with dogs of all sizes and ignores cats. He is leash trained, house broken, does not need to be kenneled and know basic commands. He will sit, shake, lay down and stay. Loves to go on walks.

He will need proper introductions to all people to build trust and self-confidence. In order to do this- when he meets a new person, a proper meet and greet is recommended. To do this: simply- toss a good treat at him so he associates the new person as a positive introduction. He has shown so much progress in training and will need a patient family to continue to work with him.

He is an absolutely amazing dog that wants nothing more than to please you and be loved.

*He would do best in a quiet home. He prefers to lay around and relax and would do great with a low key household.

****Privacy Fenced in yard and older kids in the home would be perfect for Willie Nelson

  6. I have personally met every single one of these dogs. I can vouch for personality and descriptions (some have been edited by me as well)

All photos were done in my studio, so i have been able to work with them one on one for about an hour or so each. The only exception is Newt, which was an on location session, so he's wearing a harness.

These are some great dogs and they are just looking for the right place to call home.

I try not to sugar coat dogs, so what you are reading is a good testament to each of the dogs.

    Myla

Myla is a beautiful girl who is very loving and sweet! She loves playing with her foster brother and they have become besties! They love to run around the back yard and chase each other. Myla is very energetic, so she will need an active family to give her lots of love and exercise. Lots of walks, runs, hikes and exploring parks around the city would be perfect for her!

Myla is working on her manners and will need a patient new family to continue this process. She is very smart and picks up command quickly: she knows sit and shake. She is working on stay and down. She takes her treats so gentle and is always looking to please you! She is currently in training classes working on her manners~she will impress you with how well she knows her behavior commands.

    Truman

Truman, is a sweet boy who's owner passed away very suddenly. This sweet boy loves to run, and sniff. He will need someone who is familiar with hounds, and understands that the #noserules all. But don't let that deter you, he loves his people and only wants to have fun. Looking for a running partner or a dog park dog? This boy will happily join you, but dont forget to let him do some sniff work too. I have no doubt he would thrive in some tracking classes.

    Molly and CC

    Bonded Senior Pair

Meet Molly the #goldenretriever and CC the #shepherdmix. This #senior #bondedpair is looking for thier family. They would love a relaxed home, with few stairs. Molly would love someone who will make sure her love of #tennisballs and cuddling is attended to, and CC would like a lazy walk or yard to mosey in. Are you a gamer looking for your couch potatos or retired couple looking for companionship, maybe the kids have moved out and looking to fill the house again, these two will happily fill that empty hole in your heart. CC takes time to warm up to you, but once you show her you will give some butt scratches, she'll happily follow you everywhere and give you her heart.

    Newt

Newt is an australian cattle dog and is a VERY active little man. He's a lover and SUPER playful. Newt has some seperation anxiety and would likely benefit from a home where he is with a VERY active family, and wont be crating him. He's still a young pup and can likely be trained to be at your side all the time for a working job. His foster mom works with him daily on training and loves him to peices. He will only go to a home that is familiar with Active working breed dogs.

    Kai

Hi- my name is Kai and I have been assured by my foster mom that I am just the "handsomest" boy in the entire world. I am about 6 months old and I am a ton of fun & puppy play energy wrapped up in a small package. I am only about 30 lbs. right now and my foster mom thinks I am going to be a "pocket pittie" when I am all grown up. I have mastered the art of housebreaking in record time and already know the commands for "sit", "down" and am learning "leave it". I LOVE other dogs and I mostly ignore cats.

I am searching for an active family that loves to play and would enjoy family outings to the dog park where I could be the social butterfly that I truly am. I adore making new friends both human & canine. I am eager to please & up for adventure. If I sound like your kinda dog - come meet me in person. I won't disappoint!
