  1. And now for something different...  (well different than what I've seen before.)

This is the TyreDown. I's an Aussie invention. I got mine from Lockitt.com for $120. The folding trailer and the front chock are from Harbor Freight (OK, and the ramp and wheel chocks, tie downs, and D-rings are also from HF.)

I really like this approach because it allows the bike suspension to help dampen the bumps. And it was cheap.

Why did I buy / build the trailer rather than ride the bike to New York? - Because when you're taking the wife to visit her folks, who live right on some awesome roads, and the choice is trailer the bike or leave the bike home...

  2. I believe I will try and make this.  As long as my bike is top notch and ready to go and I have no plans with the significant other I will attend.  I am new so I will start in the slow/new group.

That's a lot of conditions.  But please try to make it.

Pretty soon now, guys will start posting for regional meet-up locations. There will definitely be one for folks from NEO so try to hook up with them.

  3. Jason - Welcome to the forum!

Most of the guys on here are exceptionally envious of the roads that you live near.

The EPIC ride that you're hearing about has sometimes been held in Logan, but this ride on 9/12 and the most recent one (or two?) start/started from New Concord OH which for you is a 2-hr ride to get to the meeting spot.

Post on the EPIC ride thread if you decide to go. I and maybe others from the south east areas could meet up with you in Athens.

  4. Chuck - Sorry, I was driving with my daughter to get her and her car to San Diego for grad school. I'm back now!

    I only took a few.

Here's a shot from near the crest looking west. I was waiting for the road to re-open after an accident was cleared up.

Here's a shot from an overlook about half-way down the west side.

  5. Yesterday I managed to take care of a troublesome errand and to visit a road that I've been meaning to try out. I live in Parkersburg WV near the western end of the state and needed to get funds to a Bank of America and the closest one was Harrisonburg, VA. This was for my daughter's rent in San Diego - but that's not the story. Anyway, I've been meaning to hit US-33 and have been on parts closer to home. But I've heard and can report that the very best of twisty goodness for this road is on the far eastern part where it crosses the last and highest of the ridges in this part of the Alleghenys then goes down into Virginia, or as we call it here from the western side, East Virginia.

I have some shots from the return trip, that I'll post later.

For now, here are some Google Map links.

Here's the map overview. Long valley sweepers, then HOLY COW!, then long valley, not many sweepers.

Here's a link to the street view along the side of the road in VA, heading up to the first set of curves.

I looked for this because the sign in this spot yesterday was a lot more EXPRESSIVE. It said something like "MOTORCYCLISTS! MANY CRASHES ON NEXT 4 1/2 MILES" The Use Caution" sign in the pic apparently wasn't doing it. I noticed that every curve seemed to have glittery bits of glass shards in the road and on the side.

Unfortunately, I had to ride 2 hours to get to the start of this stuff. The quickest way is on the US-50 slab then I-79, which is what I used yesterday. There are MANY other more interesting routes, but they would have taken too long - yesterday. I might have to move to Elkins. blah.gif

  6. Welcome Doug!

Try to join us for the EPIC ride this fall (late summer? - they're still debating). It's a great time to meet people. We break into small groups based on speed/skill. The slow group has the most fun. Honest.

  7. I love my photocromatic shield on my rf1200... It gets dark before I'm even rolling down the road... Won't lighten quick enough for tunnels, but I spend 99.99% of my time not in tunnels, so that's a moot point for me.... Ride to work at noon when the sun is high and come home in the dark... Meets my needs perfectly and money well spent

Wait a minute! You mean you ACTUALLY got one of the rare and elusive Transitions shields for the RF1200?

I walked into Iron Pony in April 2014 expecting to buy a Bell RS-1 to get the Transitions. The sales guy talked me into getting the RF-1200 partly based on the expectation that the Transitions shield would soon be available. I cancelled the order about 10 months later. Love the helmet. Really wish I had the shield.

How, where, when did you get yours?
