  1. so how hard would an SRT4 swap be into one of these? I've seen old turbo minivans with the later SRT4 neon/GT crusier swapped engines. Would be the best sleeper ever. I just realized this one doesn't have the digital dash. Don't know if that is good or bad but the digital ones are cool to look at. That color makes me think of Carvel ice cream. I don't know why.
  2. Whenever my friends bitch about there being too much government regulation I always say - if you want to know what no regulation looks like look at the illegal drug trade. Because it is illegal there is no regulation on quality, disclosures, sale, and no protection from the courts. What you end up with is a lot of people ripping off each other at the end user's expense. Even this issue now, they are passing off a more lethal drug as a lesser one with no notice because they need to trade off the recognizability of heroin. If it gets people high, good for business, if it kills them, good for business and we don't even have to tell them we cut it with the same stuff drywall is made of because it isn't like it's healthy anyway.
  3. You would think, but every time there is a rash of ODs from the same supplier addicts actively search out who it is and buy from them. The logic is that his/her stuff must be really pure and those other people couldn't handle it. So yeah...killing your customer base can sometimes be good for business.
  4. $4k or $3400 to fix a $500 brake problem. A. I doing this math right? Fix the Chevy, drive it till something else fails. Junk it.
  5. Do this. Despite the power an LS makes for its size an original big block truck should have a big block still in it.
  6. I couldn't figure it out either. Either the had a ghia body with a pan so rusty and an engine so junk it didn't make sense to try and fix it, or they had a bitch basket with a perfect drivetrain and pan and a shit body and just wanted to rebody it into something cooler. I can't imagine the motivation. It's a ton of fab work and it looks to be done reasonably well...so....
  7. http://cleveland.craigslist.org/cto/5741018062.html It's odd for sure. I always looked at the Ghia as a poor man's 356 Porsche since they are mechanically similar cars and both have one piece body so I am not sure what advantage comes from making a great looking air-cooled vw FWD and Front engined.
  8. Why didn't you borrow my multimeter? It's one of the few tools I actually have here and use all the time. Couple of things: 1) the eurovan has a 120 amp alternator and an optional 150 amp alternator. Are you sure this one had a 120amp alternator? Because if it had the optional 150 amp and you replaced it with a 120 it might throw an error code or a battery idiot light. 2) Are the connectors exactly the same or just "similar"? Sometimes similar connectors have different tolerances and the new alternator might have a looser fit which is causing some intermittent interruption in the current. 3) did you try a battery disconnect and reset of the computer after replacing the alternator? 4) are the pulleys the exact same size? different size pulleys may cause the new alternator to spin slower or faster than required, either causing an overcharging or under charging situation.
  9. You are probably right, I know nothing about Lexus cars. It had an IS badge and a square beneath it with an F. Whatever it was it was the common one not some expensive fancy super car. Still, I can't think of a bigger slug than a 4000lb awd German car making 215hp. Dude should have at least walked away from me.
  10. Was on getting on 270 from Easton yesterday and and Guy in a blacked out late model IS-f tried to cut me off. I saw him mash the pedal and I did the same. I thought for sure he was going to walk my '06 325xi 6mt Beemer (215 rated hp!) but we stayed door to door from 30-70mph and actually I crept on him by centimeters till I ran out of room and he went right. I thought the F was Lexus's sport model. Are those cars dog slow or did I just find the one boat anchor in an otherwise ok platform?
  11. All the 1970 model year and later 396 badged vehicles were actually 402ci engines. They were basically 396 blocks bored .030 over to a stock bore of 4.125. Chances are your block is a 402 with a .030 on top indicating at least a piston and ring job (common on big blocks that were used everyday once they got to 70k miles). Your engine should have a number that matches the vin stamped on it and that's how you know it's original, not by whether it's a 396 or not. Currently you have .060 worth of material left before that block is junk. If the rotating assembly is good, get a set of 396 .090 over Pistons (.060 over 402 Pistons) and stab them in. I really wouldn't worry about the bottom end too much unless you saw actual damage or rust from sitting because BBCs from that era are pretty under stressed. Get a 350hp ss396 chevelle cam, a Holley 4bbl on a dual plane manifold, and call it a day. That's the budget way. I had a 1972 402 truck engine in my old 1967 chevelle. The cam was rated for 290hp because truck (lots of torque). Wasn't any fun until I put in an SS396/350hp factory cam. Car woke right up.
  12. Does anybody even still listen to radio? They did, it was called Payola. they got caught in 1959: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payola And they still do in a way because of various loop holes that nobody sees fit to close and the use of a proxy called an indie. Rather than bribe one person they buy the whole station by underwriting the stations promotions (or did you think the radio station was paying for that trip to cochella?) Radio Airplay campaigns (similar to oscar campaigns) make sure the practice will not go away. Also because playlists in new media are a lot like radio airplay except without the pesky government oversight so payola is now self policed. Awesome isn't it.
  13. In some states it is also illegal and most often in breach of contract. They can't dump you because you exercised your contractual right to file a single claim. They usually get around this by finding another reason to cancel or exercising an option to not renew. If you are filing excessive claims within a specific time period however that is usually an indication of fraud or at the very least they didn't classify your risk properly and they can drop you for that as well. every ins company has different thresholds as to what they find an acceptable risk. Smaller companies have tigher thresholds - sometimes this is the advantage of going with a bigger national company. You could hit a 747 loaded with nuns and Geico may not go under with the pay out, but hit a limo full of kardashians and your local ins company may be at the courthouse the next day filing chapter 11 before the payout is even calculated. This is a common practice and honestly, one you probably benefited from. think about it - if they dropped you when you got your second ticket then you would have had to search for new insurance, probably at a higher rate, or they would have re-assessed the risk and made you pay a higher rate and you would have been paying that higher rate from then till now. Instead they gave you the benefit of the doubt since you weren't costing them any money and didn't "recheck" (some smaller insurance companies do this as a normal practice across the board, so do not). Now that you have cost them money they reevaluated your risk profile and dropped you from coverage because you have exceeded their thresholds. Does it suck that you have to find new insurance at a higher rate? yes it does. But which sucks more having to find it now or having to have paid out a larger premium over time and still be dropped or facing a rate hike? not trying to be a dick, just find the positive and move on.
  14. what days were those? when we had Vanilla Ice?, Milli Vanilli? The Bay City Rollers? Remember for every Doors or Led Zeppelin there is always a Captain and Tennille or Herman's Hermits. The distribution of music has changed, and in many ways it's much harder to find good music. Also with the advent of social media and file sharing, and artist distribution, a very ugly truth was exposed: everyone's taste in music blows.
  15. Dump it. It's just going to nit pick you for years as missed stuff continues to surface. I'll tell you a funny semi- related story: in 2000 I got t-boned in a parking lot in my jeep. The accident bent the front driveshaft and caused a bearing to cock slightly in the transfer case. In 2013 the transfer case failed due to that original accident damage. Actually the internal oil pump failed years before because of the accident damage But because I only used it in winter and overfilled it with synthetic every year it managed to limp along for a while. Once they get hit they are never the same and shit is going to lay dormant and continue to surface much later.
  16. You realize that the "e-check" is a local thing and has nothing to do with the EPA right? EPA is focused on national standards and mostly working on a federal level. They have almost nothing to do with the city of Dayton deciding they want to test for emissions.
  17. miata's be expensive yo: http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/5694180797.html this has good bones: http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/cto/5708234050.html I'm going to get flamed to a crisp for this suggestion...but...it is cheap, RWD, has great aftermarket: http://dayton.craigslist.org/cto/5749116755.html http://cleveland.craigslist.org/cto/5747522024.html Cheap enough might make the work it needs worth it: http://toledo.craigslist.org/cto/5699638337.html Completely out of budget but I was looking for an excuse to post it: http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/5716034551.html
  18. I must be the only one on this forum that liked the bumper without the lip. Because it was different. because cars all look too damn much alike. Nice car.
  19. for the record this is called a Secretary...or if you are European a Bookcase Bureau, secretaire, or escritoire. If you have it advertised somewhere else you might want to include those terms as there are people who look specifically for high secretary desks like that for bedrooms and you may not be reaching them. Despite the awful teal paint that is a really good deal for someone, if I had the space for it I would be all over it but my apartment is stuffed as is. http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p81/alittlelessordinary/hutch2_zpsxqorhqhw.jpg
  20. Anybody who runs auto-x with a new camaro, mustang, or challenger. The bigger problem is the car has a really long wheelbase. At 112 inches it's about the same as a 1977-1990 caprice or 1968-77 gm a-body but with less overhang and better balance. The suspension and the cost are really the selling point - derived from the D-type race cars and the same setup as in the E-type and was used in the 70's and 80's to win in touring car, and yet people literally throw these cars away. It was the goofy suggestion but it has some legitimacy. Well that's the universal truth about racing isn't it. My father used to beat up on Jaguars, healeys, MGs, etc in SCCA with a 1969 Z/28. Everyone said big fat American cars couldn't take on the tiny sports cars in SCCA till the took home the trophy 3 years running.
  21. the Broadspeed body kit is still available from a company called Fibresports in england, though I think shipping might ruin your budget: http://www.fibresports.co.uk/products/Jaguar/XJ6 the original cars used XJ12C coupes, but people widebody the sedans with home made flares. The spoilers only fit the series II chrome bumper cars anyway. When you think about it, the car isn't really any bigger than a 1st gen camaro (it's certainly smaller than a chevelle) and just as light, but will have 4 wheel discs and Independent suspension front and rear. It has a stately presence when finished out as a race car even if you don't flare it: http://www.my105.com/private_images/11195/49850_IMG_2455_edited_m.jpg After watching the auto-x at goodguys this year I had dreams about getting a budget chevy powered xj6 basher and taking on those $100K 1st gen camaros and A-bodies. I betcha it would do very well against some of those cars.
  22. what about a SB chevy (non-LS) swapped jaguar xj6/xjs? Sure they are big cars but they have amazing suspension and you can find ones already swapped for under $3K: http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/5715325975.html Broadspeed raced the XJ series in the 1970's in euro touring car championships: http://www.jagweb.com/jaguarmodelclub/2005/olmag/59/b04.JPG Junkyards are stockpiled with them so used spares are cheap ($500 parts cars are common) although new parts might be pricy. The jaguar rear end was used for many kit car cobras to replicate the IRS of the original so there is a decent aftermarket for it (Kugel rear ends are a copy) including quick change center sections. You can pick up a dry sump SBC setup used from a circle track racer for about $400 (if CL is to be believed). One thing is for sure you would stand out.
  23. The only reason the automakers have made the progress they have since 1967 (the first year of emissions controls on cars) is because the EPA was holding their feet to the fire. they did not invest in developing emissions controls out of the kindness of their heart. And yet, some of their progress is artificial because they have also gotten better at cheating at emissions testing. VW was not the first to get caught by a long shot: GM got nailed back in 1995 for 1991-1995 Cadillac 4.9L v8s where the car turned off emissions controls when the A/C was running. Are the new cars cleaner? sure, how much cleaner? we don't really know because we don't know who is still cheating. Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Cummings, have all be caught for cheating emissions testing in the past.
  24. are you looking to "build" something or do you just want to strip down an already running car? If the former...why not a factory five 818 since you always seem to have access to lots of subaru parts. If the later....E30 bmw. You can still get 325es for real cheap. Swap with a 325i head to get rid of the 4K redline and make a super eta (325e models are 2.7L not 2.5L like the 325i). If you wreck it, recycle it into beer cans and get another. Plus it makes you eligible for all sorts of other racing series if you want to take it to another level.
