At the very least good lace-up boots are important. At least 8 inch tall boots are my preference. Also, look at the soles. Material composition and tread design should be of the nature that they resist you losing your footing should you put your foot down at a stop where fluids, sand, gravel or other gook has accumulated at traffic signals, stop signs.

Cracked Case - Oil Splattering All Over the Place
Wandering Soul replied to Fin's topic in Tech and Tips
As long as you didn't disturb the cam gears timing will be where it needs to be. At one time Kohler offered on line manuals you could down load in PDF for all their engines. Try calling 800.544.2444 and ask them if they still offer those. Has torque specs, illustrations, and assembly steps right down to the bare crankcase.- 22 replies

Cracked Case - Oil Splattering All Over the Place

The old loose cover bolt trick. How old is that motor? Kohler has all but admitted they had assembly problems. Just wasn't torqued right. That puller you brought is good for steering wheels and other stuff. As long as you got the cover off, get a new seal where the crank comes up through. As long as you've got the flywheel off...- 22 replies

Weight. Rotating mass. Pull the clutch lever and blip the throttle. You'll feel the resulting torque.

I'm going to disagree with Tim; my experience with those motors has been good, I'm on my third one in 40 years. One of them still running for a lady I know. Is the crack all the way through? Getting oil out of it? In order to tig or brazed, it has to be cleaned and the crack stop-drilled at it's end 1/16" drill is good. Clean it with soap, water, and compressed air acetone doesn't seem to like tig/brazing. I would not use JBWeld as suggest in the video. If that stuff falls into the crankcase who knows what all it'll fuck up. Someone sells aluminum bars that a MAP gas torch will melt. Seen a Sportster primary cover fixed with one of them. Two years now and holding up good. There's videos on youtube about the aluminum stick and MAP gas. Also on Kohler engine repairs. Find Kohler's website and download the manual for that motor (free). Also order any gaskets and pieces you need. I love my local dealer, but Kohler's site is cheaper even with shipping.- 22 replies

Glad you're alright. I think with less that 300 miles on the tires you may not have "seasoned" them enough; especially on the edges. That release agent applied to the mold to facilitate removal of the tire can be a bitch.

William Crum Sentenced for 15 years for Hitting Motorcyclist
Wandering Soul replied to DerekClouser's topic in Daily Ride
He ought to die in there, but he might get probation in 2 years or so. Any bets on the fuckstick getting right back behind the wheel? -
I predict there's going to be more self-driving car and motorcycle accidents. It's interesting that the motorcycle cop is kind of blowing this accident off as just a bump. Also that Arizona has allowed uber's self-guided missiles after the King Of Snowflakes state decided to limit them.

So you're going to walk into his shop and demand his wrench burn one before he touches your bike? Other people do as they want to do, and that's great if they make it work and everybody's happy. And I'm glad about the friendships. But an individual who gets buzzed and works on customers' bikes is not who I would want turning wrenches on mine.
-
I'm acquainted with the guy; he gives a serious shit about the work he puts out. Stoners have caused him some grief in the past, so he doesn't want that again. It's his business; he can run it like he wants. Wouldn't you? And for what it's worth, I drink beer on occasion. When I'm spinning wrenches on anything, no drinking. I get a little out of touch, I'm the one who does it over and pays for any parts fucked up. That crap about being stoned or drunk and doing beautiful awesome work is just that. Crap.

Lap times are secondary to the rate bones heal and skin grows back for my money. Rubber ages; over time it dries out, and will fail. But it's your bike and hide. 5 plus years will never be on my bikes.

Kerist on a popsickle stick!!!!!!!!!!! Tim, ask her out. Tracy, go with him. What's the worst that could happen? Fuck a bunch of what people think. It is actually fun to be insane together. And I got my wife through a website. Didn't need any cash, coupons or medical exams. Best thing I've done in the last 10-40 years. Don't give me any bullshit about "distances"; I went to Syracuse New York to date. During winter.

Don't know about noise issues, but google "tire date codes". Look on your sidewalls and see when they were made. More than two years old, replace them. Any cracks in the sidewalls, replace them.

Have you looked at it like you're focusing on "you gotta get married?" Sounds a bit like it. I gave up on women finally after ten years of finding out just how people can be different (read crazy, ect.). I decided to quit dating seriously, quit picking girls up in bars (fun but sucks as bad as on-line dating). I laid back, enjoyed life and concentrated on work, riding and such. Bam! Met the mother of my 3 kids, have grandkids now (yeah I'm old) and have had a good life. And yeah I know I'm not hurting Dr. Phil one bit.

This. ^ Yes, bad all around. You're going to meet with a thief. It's fucking craigslist for God's sake. Yeah, I'd gone armed. I wouldn't take family members with me, I'd call on two riders who I trust, are level headed, and can handle themselves when shit goes south. I've helped recover several bikes through the years. Just like in the military, recon was done, we chose the time and place as much as we could. Worst that happened was a punk got his ass stomped. We tried once getting the cops (local) involved, but we were patted on the head and told "We'll look into it". Never heard shit about it. And who knows? This could have been the incident where Mr. Small Time would pull his 9 and step his game up. Instead of "Wake up Baby", we'd be reading "My Baby's a good boy he didn't shoot nobody"...with three people shot dead. The guy may have not had sufficient cause to shoot the thief, but I wasn't there. I'm sorry for all. But everyone chooses how to live their life. And we all have to take responsibility for our actions, words and thoughts.

Medical payments on motorcycle insurance
Wandering Soul replied to flashesbuck's topic in Daily Ride
Insurance through my employer did pick up in-network bills. Some of the therapy it wouldn't. Ambulance and helicopter weren't even considered. I can now tell that the damned township part-time cop that let the driver walk away without even a ticket settled up out of court. That's what brought parts to rebuild my panhead. Frame was tweaked and some of it wouldn't buff out. -
Medical payments on motorcycle insurance
Wandering Soul replied to flashesbuck's topic in Daily Ride
Cincinnati Insurance Company. I carry $10,000 and here's why. If your current policy doesn't offer medical for you and a passenger, shitcan them and go with something that does. DO NOT COUNT ON THE OTHER DRIVER HAVING INSURANCE!!! The crackhead who stopped my ballroom dancing career had none!
