'01 Focus, 60k miles. Wife complains of a shimmy and knocking noise in the steering. This can be felt in the steering wheel and chassis of the car. I pulled the driver's side wheel (where she says the noise is) and I can grab the caliper and move it back and forth about 1/4". No play in the outer tie rod, the play seems to be in the rack and pinion. Is this normal? Any ideas? Seems awfully early for the rack to go bad.

My wifes Focus has something loose in the front end and I need to have it fixed today! Any help would be much appreciated! BC
