The avg per kWh rate in Ohio for generation is something like 9.2 cents. A co-op is probably charging more than that, but I would be surprised if it were WAY more. If you were to just shop for your power through an alternative supplier, you would be in the low 7's/high 6's per kWh (I know you can't personally, and I feel for you. That sucks). Again, this is JUST FOR GENERATION; Transmission and Distribution components are regulated for ALL users in Ohio. So, Jordan, to answer the implied question, if YOU were to install a setup, you may recoup your losses in less time. However, given that you are behind a co-op, they may have separate rules re: such a setup. On the subject of Nuclear power, I, and others in my office, really feel it is incorrectly classified, and SHOULD be considered a renewable. Some of the new 4th gen reactors actually produce more fuel than they burn, and are physically incapable (that is to say, they are incapable, as a result of Physics) of "meltdown" as we see in incidents such as 3 Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima. At least two types of these reactors are built and operational at the Idaho National Laboratory.

I bet if they did that AND added GREEN buckeye leaves, Tilley would burn down Geeto's house... Well, would ya look at that....

Rats, that's what I get for not fact checking. Even better that we'll beat them at their place, then. :-)
-
Yeah, don't look now, but TCU be strugglin so far.

I'd like 5 clarify that I am not hating on ttun. I am impressed, for sure. But they are still going to lose in Columbus, and it's still going to be sweet when it happens. :-)
-
Good...let ttun get all convinced that they are legit. Will just make it that much sweeter when we beat them.

Did you show up in your bama gear so they understand why you're a hater?

Paul, always classy.

Don't feel lame, I'm not sure how to do it either.

Ox, don't get it twisted, I am FAR from a nay sayer. I'm ALL about solar. It just doesn't make sense, from a money standpoint, in Ohio yet. 1. Correct, you don't NEED batteries, but what that get's you is "3.5 hours per day" of solar, and the rest coming form the grid, just like normal. Power from the grid is FAR cheaper (unfortunately) than what you would pay per kWh for your lease. If you decided to purchase, how long, at 3.5 hours per day, do you think it would take to recoup 10k+ dollars? And that's for a system that DOESN'T move on it's axis to capture more sun. 2. Also correct. Which begs the question, why do it now? Why not wait till it makes more sense, and the tech has caught up to the money? 3. For 10 or more years at a time. And you will pay more per kWh than you would on the grid. 4. The German .gov is sponsoring that change, and they will tell you that, while they believe it is worth it, it's also been incredibly expensive. France is 80% Nuclear, and for my money, THAT'S the route we should be headed as well. Mitch, again, it's a step in the right direction, but it's an "out of the money" play. If you value the principle more than the cash, then I encourage you, do it.

In Ohio, a solar system is not cost effective. You would have to use it for 20+ years without incident (based upon average costs and outputs of current gen systems) in order to recoup your expenses. If you just want to be "off the grid" to a certain extent, or value a greener lifestyle, obviously there is an intrinsic value to those things, but thats subjective. Our company does more Resi solar plans than anyone in Texas, and though we would LOVE to get into the midwest and do the same thing, the value proposition just isn't there yet. Still waiting for the cost of systems to go down some, and the output to go up. Battery tech needs to catch up as well.

Even more so than Tropico?

I <3 that thread. :lolguy:

So, I should be looking for a money order, then?

The apology was meant more for Geeto, as he is who you had originally been responding to. I was trying to make a point WITHOUT bashing the Geetster, in this case.

Does this mean you don't want to be like me anymore? :lolguy:

I have to disagree. Not everyone becomes a dick behind a keyboard, and not everyone remembers not to be an overbearing, know it all jerk IRL. What that shows is a LACK of character. Character has to do with being the same guy all the time, regardless of who's looking or what medium your are expressing yourself through. (This is sure to sounded pointed, but I am actually meaning to be general in my intent. I apologize for any offense). I understand that what you meant is that you actually enjoy the people here more IRL than on the board, and that makes perfect sense...a lot of us do. I miss being able to see you assholes on a regular basis, and give you noogies. The people on the board have grown (maybe not in maturity) and have more adult problems now. Kids, mortgages, loans, families, yada yada. As the group has grown up, people have branched off, gotten into different things (guns, politics, spanish monkey porn) and cars, while in most cases still a love, are now splitting time. It's just how it goes, y'all. What Doc said really is legit, we have become the metallica of local enthusiast boards. Edgy and cool garage band that rocks like no other...and now were older and doing some different stuff that a lot of the OG fans may not like. Sometimes a return to the original (like St. Anger) just ends up being even more poorly rec'd than the changes already experienced. Embrace what we have grown into. Check out the CB, do cars and coffee (created by a member, props Clay), hit up an autox event (which CR/CB is damn near running nowadays), match wits with Geeto and I in useless online arguments (that will actually remind you of OG CR, but smarter, if you're wondering), revel in Tilley's luxurious hair stylings... We are who we have always been...just different. And that's good and bad. Take it or leave it.

You da man, doc. Shocking.

Props on this.

Geeto was pretty clear on his stance, Joe. I feel it pertinent to point out that my offense is not contrived. I did not read Geeto's referenced Wiki page on the colloquialism, nor did I do any research on my point. I KNOW about the racist undertones, because in times past I have felt wrong about such things, and looked into them. My explanation was based on my own personal experiences. You that know me won't be surprised that I am knowledgeable about things like this, because, well, I'm weird and I remember history shit like this. To wit; Geeto's assertion that "calling a spade a spade" also carries no racial bias is likewise incorrect. It may have originally been meant by the Greeks of old simply to refer to something by it's rightful name, but even that is doubtful. To imply that in every instance of it's use, no slight was intended is laughable. While it's use may have predated the word "spade" as a racial reference, the only places I have heard that phrase uttered in MY time on this planet have been around a card table, delivered with a wink and a nod, and most certainly not in mixed company (as far as the speakers knew at the time, at least). Regardless, current societal interpretations trump origin meanings in 10 out of 10 personal conversations. I double dog dare you to spend any time around any black men around the age of 50 and use that phrase. (The younger gen may not get it, because they are far more blunt, and just drop the "n" word like whatevs) -

If by "Let's be clear" you mean to say "My understanding of the situation is", then you are making an accurate statement. However, to "be clear", I did NOT go "out of my way" to be offended. I read what you wrote, and based upon my prior life experience and sensibilities, I was offended. Perhaps I'm sensitive to subtle racial overtones, but this is the world in which I live. Not something you would understand, most likely, having lived with white privilege for your whole life. My view, and that of many who are black, is considered "not consistent" with "generally accepted" uses and views of many things, because, let's face it, blacks don't get to do much in the way of dictating policy. This is the third time you have brought Eli back into the conversation. For all of your insistence that he has a hardon for you, the feeling appears, from here at least, to be mutual. It was not an argument, it was an illustration. It was also less for you than it was for the casual observer. Law is YOUR strong suit, energy is mine. Unfortunately, there aren't many energy metaphors to draw on to illustrate the current situation. If you would like to explain your self delusion in a more artful way, I will not stop you. If being an asshole is subjective, could it also follow that being offended is subjective as well? What is offensive to me may not be to you, however, your view of that situation does not change mine. Interesting that you would point that out. The difference here though, is that while you may not mind being called an asshole, I DO mind racist commentary. Subtle, ignorant, or otherwise. EDIT: It strikes me, as I read back through the thread, how similar your response to my offense to your racism is to your response to Eli being offended that the OP had spoilers. Is it your typical stance that folks should just not be offended by things? That would at least partially explain the general attitude of distaste for your presence on CR. -

Geeto, you have done a very good job convincing yourself that I, or no one else in my position, would be offended by what you have said. And yet, clearly, I was offended. You asked me to explain to you why I was, and I did. Your cross examination of my explanation is actually MORE offensive in it's insistence that I was in the wrong for being so. And it suggests an even larger degree of myopia and self importance on your part. Additionally, admitting that you may have been ignorant of any racial implications of your statement prior to your use of it and apologizing, while not a defense, would at least have saved you from looking like, instead, you were intending to offend, and are now justifying to yourself that you are "not a racist". To use a law metaphor, if you did not know what a pistol was, or what it was used for, and yet you managed to shoot someone with it and wound/kill them, you would not be any less guilty of assault, or even murder. If, upon being charged with that crime, your argument was based not upon your own ignorance of the workings of a pistol, but instead suggested that the victim instead was at fault for allowing themselves to be wounded by the bullet you fired, you would not only be found guilty of the crime, but also considered an asshole of the highest order. None of this is a surprise to anyone on CR at this point, however. As long as my command is followed, you should have nothing to worry about. Of course you did. You love it when justice is served, except when it is served to you... Just. Like. Me.
