NHTSA proposes mandatory backup cameras by 2014
Trouble Maker replied to frenchy chan's topic in Passing Lane
A rear view camera gives you eyes you don't have. You can see below the belt line of the rear of your car. Backing out of a garage or parked in between two other cars you can see to the left and right as soon as your bumper is beyond the garage/other cars, especially if the camera has a wide angle lens. If you've never experienced one you really should before you comment too much on the perceived benefit of this technology. If they word the standard right that's what it will require. I've known someone who backed over and killed a kid. It was at a gas station and he was driving an SUV. They got into the car, the kid walked behind the car and couldn't be seen due to where the child was. The cops very quickly ruled it an accident and the parents pressed no charges. Accidents like this do happen that could only be prevented by a camera (and someone watching that camera). Even if someone is not paying 100% attention, the camera will probably help even more. That is exactly what they do, a cost versus benefit analysis. http://www.nhtsa.gov/DOT/NHTSA/Rulemaking/Rules/Associated%20Files/ESC_PRIA.pdf That's the proposal for FMVSS 126, which is mandatory ESC on all vehicles starting MY2012, later this year. Go to page 8/E-5 for the summary of the cost versus benefit analysis. Everyone, this is the great thing about our government... If you don't like this proposal go comment! Space trash will actually be a problem in the future, but for other reasons that I'm sure everyone here cares more about than kids lives, like cell phone reception and TV shows being interrupted. -

People who make more can afford to save/invest thus spending less of the income on consumption, and people who make little need to spend all of their income on consumption. This would have people who make less money pay even more of a percentage of their income in taxes than people who make more. That=one way ticket to third world country.

I was going to come... not sure now.

To the OP, most of it boils down to this. Complete separate, don't want to make it seem like I'm connecting the two because I'm not. The only issue I see with a flat tax, and it's a huge one, is that I see no way for it to not make the rich richer and the poor poorer. That's a slippery slope that leads us into being a 3rd world country. If we instituted that right now we'd have to take people who make below X would get taxed more and have less money to live on and people who make more than that would just have more money to stick in the bank or invest. That X is more than probably anyone by 5-10 people on this board make. What's so wrong with a progressive tax rate, but getting rid of the plethora of rules and deductions? You make X, you get taxed Y. That's not more or less simple than a flat tax. Just not 'fair' to the people that make a lot of money. But it makes more sense in terms of strengthening our economy and society. The only way I could possibly see a flat tax working is if it cuts off at a certain level or there is some base deduction that everyone get's to take i.e. you make below X and you get taxed less (or none). I'm talking poverty levels here, not anything like most people here hopefully make. It would still mean most of us taking home and having less so the (truly) rich can have more. Some parts of this might sound like I'm just not wanting taxed more, but that's not it at all. I'd just like to see a truly fair and simple system that strengthens this country and our communities. I'm actually all for being taxed more along with everyone else in this country if it could mean strengthening our society through social programs, infrastructure, etc. and getting out of debt. Unfortunately I don't trust our government (whether we are talking local/city, state or federal) to do any of that (even though I do think that should be there job).

The old white haired guy who I, and probably most people, didn't know or give a fuck who he was? I've heard that next year an excessive celebration call results in the TD being called back? If that's true this is the real issue. It seems that all of the sudden excessive celebration is being called quite a bit towards the end of this college football season. I barely knew it existed at the beginning of the season. If that's true about next year I think what's happening is NCAAFB refs trying to hammer this point home before its' a more serious penalty for next year. Trying to set the precedent so people don't bitch as much next year. Not that I think it will make people bitch any less, but I think that's what they are trying to do. On the flip side if I were a coach and this rule were in place the only thing the player who made the TD would be allowed to do is the prayer thing, then hand the ball to the ref either directly before or after that. Anything else and their asses are mine for the next week. Most other penalties, while the fault of the player, may not be completely preventable or at least not purposeful. If you know that some excessive celebrating, which is a judgment call by the refs, could result in a penalty you just don't do it. It's tantamount to pushing another player after the end of the play. When a play is over, you go back to your line or bench.

In a personal situation, once someone like that refuses to go to the hospital I'm out. Joe, while he might not have directly saved the woman's life, he did do exactly what he's supposed to do in a situation like this. Most either don't know what to do or are incapable of handling the situation. Whether he did all of it purposefully or by accident, he still did all of it. I can't believe Chase would reject an ambulance if you don't let them know they are coming.

Don't like to read? Sounds like a good time to start! I'm sure you can find something you like.

Well, it's hard to compare by simple numbers and I'm sure he will come back with his experience, the numbers probably speak for themselves. 30hp less than your car and 3ft-lbs more with about the same weight. Just slightly lower power to weight than the V6 Mustang. It probably moves out alright. Nice car by the way, very nice looking. I'm very impressed with what Hyundai has been coming out with for the last few years.

Well, it sounds like you have 4 cars to go test drive and use that to decide which one you really want! -
Money on her driving a Pontiac Sunfire with a Princess banner on it. If she doesn't let her know mine is for sale, only because I'm sure she would pay top dollar for it. I know you got her number!

http://images.thetruthaboutcars.com/2010/09/s5grn-527x350.jpg Do this in a custom paint color. For something like $1.xk you can get any color currently in their catalog, and $2.xk you can get ANY color you want. A chance to do something really unique. You don't have to do something as unique as this, but why do a stock paint color when you can do anything you want. Infinity G37x Coupe (AWD) is another one. My brother-in-law has a Sedan and it's a very nice car. No real competition for the S5, but it shouldn't be since it's $13k less. Much closer in price to the A5, but the G37 has 120 more HP, which in turn only has 25hp less than the S5. Probably worth a drive. 911s come in AWD. CTS coupes also come in AWD. -

Previous gen TL? I think those are about the same size inside as the RL if not bigger. Hopefully Orion can chime in on that point. The new TLs are huge inside and out.

iPhone 4 peeps, reception is better in iOS 4.2 GM. (Review)
Trouble Maker replied to SpaceGhost's topic in Dumpster
I think you're getting confused in between 'antenna gate' and poor reception in general. With the antenna problem (antenna gate) that made big media news, the antenna is the metal trim ring that wraps around the outer edge of the phone. The way antennas work (well) is by being some multiple (or fraction) of the wavelength of the transmitting frequency. This helps due to the phenomenon called resonance. So basically the antenna needs to be a specific length, or many different specific lengths that are multiples or fractions of the wavelength. Because of this the antenna is not solid around the outside of the phone. There is a break in the antenna. When you bridge this gap with some part of your body, like your finger or hand being put around the phone, it shorts out the antenna and you get no reception. This is more generalities because I don't know anything specifically about what they changed with iOS 4.2 that supposedly helps the reception. There is the issue of deciphering what's coming into the antenna. Your phone doesn't just receive a signal of someone talking. It receives some digital, compressed, modulated signal. So there is hardware and software on your phone to turn that into someone talking to you. The issue is when the signals get really small, what's noise and what's the signal? It's like trying to listen to someone talk across 270 during rush hour. So if you can tweak something here and there to filter out more of that noise you can get better reception, especially at low signal levels. -

You update iTunes, then sync your phone, then it will ask you if you want to update to iOS 15.467. iOS updates usually require an iTunes update for some reason. -
