  4. Beat me to it. The last GT500 was 660 hp and ran in the 11's. We'll see how this stacks up.
  5. There was a press day last Thursday at the proving grounds that gave some tech info. Still no HP numbers.

You must realize that while data storage is getting larger and cheaper, you are talking about the automotive market where components have to operate and survive through wide temperature ranges and vibration. The devices on the consumer market are much more advanced in this respect. Also, in the automotive market you're a hero if you can slash $0.50 from a BOM, so putting unnecessarily large memory in your design would need a very good business case. For instance, the original language in the California AV legislation stated that the vehicle would have to record 30 seconds of all sensor data leading up to an incident. In an Autonomous Vehicle this is a very loaded statement, as these cars have LOTS of sensors generating massive amounts of data every second. If you were to record full - resolution video for a camera system you could possibly pass 1GB every 10 seconds. Some of these cars have 8+ cameras, 6+ radar's, probably LIDIR, on them. You can see from this that you may have to decide what data to save with some discretion. Don't get me wrong, if people start buying cars based off a dash cam being an available option then you'll probably see it happen. But right now the climate is more about privacy and big brother than this.
  7. I would put the heavy truck industry about on - par with those little OBD2 port monitors insurance companies will give you to monitor your driving (like Progressive). The one exception being that the trucks will record video of the event. But again, this is mostly due to liability on the fleet operator's part and there's little incentive for a vehicle OEM to offer this yet. Although dash cams seem more and more like a great idea to me. The most strict laws I have seen for event recording are in the California Automated Vehicles legislation. I put see this Ford announcement as more of a knowledge transfer from racing. For years the cars have had a black box that records the force of impact and can display this to responding personnel (usually by blinking an LED). In this case, it may give 911 operators a better idea of what recuse personnel to deply.
  8. Black boxes don't have the amount of memory available to store a large number of events, so they trigger on the catastrophic ones. And it's probably less about snitching on you as it is about covering the manufacturer in litigation. For instance, some ass hat wrecks and sues the manufacturer for his injury, but the black box data shows he wasn't wearing his seat belt. It also has the added benefit of protecting the consumer, take the current GM ignition switch debacle.

  11. That Zero Hedge article is total bullshit. It probably depends on the component, but typically the supplier pays for it. They do a time study in order to determine tech time, multiply that by the number of cars, and bill the supplier. Of course there are negotiations that occur.
  12. Analysts are now saying that they expect Takata to take a $500 million charge this year related to these recalls, given the current numbers. Supposedly, they have $1 billion in cash, but if this recall expands to 15 million (from 10.5 million today) cars they may be in trouble.
  13. This is related to the Takata airbags that have been recalled. So far it's over 10.5 million cars that have been recalled across multiple brands (VW, Toyota, Honda, GM, etc)

  18. It's the first AMG vehicle jointly developed with Mercedes and marketed in the US. I think it's also one of the winningist (is that a word) touring cars ever.
  19. Thoughts? I know there will be some die hard Harley fans upset about 'Merica, but I can't help but think that the stereotypical Harley buyer is a dying segment. I still think this embodies Harley-Davidson but opens up a totally different segment and changes the brands perception.
  20. I am eagerly awaiting the Dart SRT, and the Journey SRT will fulfill the family hauler category nicely too. I mentioned the Renegade because he said all the parts were existing for a cheap commuter and referenced a van, 2.4L, awd, since the Dart SRT engine is not a current production part. /offtopic
