DELAWARE, Ohio --
The Delaware County sheriff is under investigation for alleged misuse of taxpayer money that was spent on a business trip for training.
NBC4's Mike Bowersock reported that Sheriff Walter Davis traveled to Quantico, Va., last summer for FBI training.
It is alleged that while in Virginia, Davis used some of the money for the trip for personal use. The allegations include that he used the money to pay for meals for himself and one other person, and possible meetings with a woman who is a deputy with the sheriff's office.
According to receipts provided by the Delaware Gazette, Davis' car was parked at the Marriott Crystal Gateway hotel where the deputy was staying.
The deputy was identified as Janine Senanayake. She was formerly known as Janine England when she was a police officer in Perry Township in northeast Ohio until 2009.
She was fired from Perry Township after being caught on dashcam kissing and snuggling with her boss, the then-police chief.
The Ohio Attorney General's office confirmed that it is investigating claims of misuse of money by the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.
If Davis, who is married, spent money on the deputy, it would be classified as a misuse of funds.
Davis issued the following statement to NBC4:
"I understand that a complaint has been filed alleging that I misused taxpayer money. I do not believe I ever did anything inappropriate pertaining to the use of public funds. I plan on fully cooperating with the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI&I) as that agency is investigating the complaint. My focus will continue to be on serving the citizens of Delaware County."
Delaware County has a policy against supervisors having a romantic relationship with a subordinate, but those rules to not apply to the sheriff.
The policy applies to employees under the supervision of county commissioners.
Some residents said they believe the investigation may be the end of Davis in the sheriff's office.
"I think it's time for him to go. We want people that are going to … represent with integrity, the right kind of character and is billed as a family man and you're not a very good family man if you're doing this kind of thing, you know behind closed doors and whatnot," a resident said.
"It's wrong, in general, to be a public official, use the community's money to actually fund adventures such as this, and second of all, if you leave a paper trail … you're just asking to get caught," said Jacob Smith, a Delaware resident.
The investigation began at the request of the Delaware County prosecutor's office.
