  1. What is a good way of bonding two sheets of it together, apart from sewing? In this aplication the seam will be constantly stressed, so a good solutiontion is what I'm hunting. Also, anyone here work in construction, maybe get me a big scrap sheet of it?
  2. Give me a set of real engines. I'm going to call BS on their performance claims, no way those engines make the est 75lb each needed to hold a man still. Those are the same model aircraft turbines that propelled the big model B52 model to its death....it needed 8. They would help move him forward throught he air, but by tilting your body, you can move up to about 30mph relative to the ground without anything but gravity and air. Note the cretit at the top, "Bird Man International". They make suits that augment this effect. His feet weren't even pointed straight behind him. He appeared to ascend because the camera guy was falling faster. Those engines sound impressive, but they probably make about 30lb thrust max. You can equal that with 6 Estes E rockets from the local hobby store...or get a gas turbine where he probably got his: http://www.amtjets.com/ His had electric starters, could have been the Olympus model, they spit 50lbf each. Still not enough to maintain altitude with just body surfing. But, you may get off the ground with some wing surface. Get me the engine from one of these, toss me off a hot-air balloon, I'll show you flight....oh, and you have to pay for all of it. Hell, tape it to your car, 300lb thrust would take a second+ off your ET.
  3. If it was not full of air (or anything lighter then water), it would not float. if it had the same volume of air per ton, it would float no matter what shape it was, and it would displace the same amount of water. The carriers shape is determined by, as with all boats, by what job it does, and the need to be straight and stable. A spher of equal mass and equal volume would displace just as much water, but would not be a good place to land planes. Dive in a pool do a cannonball into a pool you'll displace the same water, no matter what shape you're in.
  4. It has nothing to do with the shape, the carrier floats because its full of air. It could be any shape you can imagine, as long as there's the same volume of air inside per ton of steel, it'll float. I'm talking about a solid hunk (or as solid as epoxied CF can be). I'm now thinking it wise to make it hollow, then to fill it water as balast, letting me tune its end buoyancy.
  5. You can make a hull out of concrete and it'll still float, thats not what I'm looking for. Basicaly I'm making something, and considering the materials whith which to make it. It will be small and solid. I want it to float, but barely. I'm looking for more of an iceburg then a bobber, and from what Andrew posted, CF may fit the bill, dependant on the bouyancy of the epoxy. I may just chip some off the basement floor, lord knows I've spilled plenty.
  6. pics or more info? The girls frame sounds appealing....hehe.....hehehehe good brakes and bearings? sorry berto, be beleive me you dont want me taking the bike for this project. http://www.bay-com.com/images/TorchCut.jpg Jason, you gots PM. Considering I'm destroying the bikes, I dont want to invest much in the bike itself. Edit, the baby carrier, I want that!
  7. Needs to have 2 good wheels and working brakes. Nothing fancy, I'm just going to cut it up, literaly. If I can get 2 identical bikes with good rear forks, it would be awsome. Very much prefer BMX or Mountain bikes, durable wheels.
  8. nothing with a beam 1/3 its length is. You guys are in troubl now, I've finished a prototype for the Zuma project....a scale prototype.....thats not meant to function....at all. http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/5917/2phast7dl.jpg
  9. I know it's light, but, when permiated totaly with its epoxy, how bouyant is it on its own? Anyone have an idea?
  10. No that was me, sleep on your back this time.
  11. So your argument is, no matter what the conditions, the swing keel cruiser wont go that fast because it will capsize first, or lean to the point that the wind no longer works. Of course, there is a way around that, if you're willing to risk the life of your spars.
  12. Scott Kirk, Kirk auto. End of story. (Ok Scott, where's my check? )
  13. people greatly underestimate venom. You could get bit in a hospital swimmingpool full of antivenom, you'll still get fucked up. He got to keep his arm, "lucky" isn't even the word for that. Many local species of spiders call necrosis, you need to worry about more then just the Brown Recluse's venom.
  14. From a dig, that pig will need it. I can see the possibility for the Catalina exeeding 6 knots. 16-17 mph realy isn't all that fast, I wouldn't have a hard time beleiving it could be done at 1/2 wind speed. the question is, since he claims GPS on the Catalina, we should slap it on the s2 in a 20mph breeze. You may be underestimating the S2. Rig up a trap, I'll loan you a harness.
  15. You two should see a dermitologist, you clearly have overactive sweat glands.
  16. .....seriously? I thought I'd heard that anti personell mines were against the geneva convention.....? Maybe the convention doesn't apply within ones own boarders. Beefing up the boarders, good. Temporary workers permits, bad. Unfortunately I missed the adress tonight, I'm solo babysitting the boy. Are there any transcripts up yet? There are many ways through minefeilds, most noisy, some inhumane toward animals.
  17. Slightly inclimate weather may actualy help the sailing. In other nerd-killing time-surfin' news: What a ship
  18. http://www.latimes.com/media/photo/2006-05/23401974.jpg If that isn't a kit car, I lost what respect I had for the Countach. Way too late in history to build a birdcage car. edit.... ugh, what a mess: http://www.autodrome-cannes.com/countach_chassis.jpg
