I personally hate the magic wand tool, especially for selecting things. It works kick ass thought if you have a dark object with say a white background. Most of the time I just use the lasso (not the magnetic one which also sucks).

I don't think it is that hard at all when you have the engine out. Everyone I have seen that has the engine out for some reason over on Stangnet has ended up hiding their wires. It looks awesome.
