they are just a beetle with awd. I would have no problem buying one with a 1.8. The pan is super easy to pull and clean it, put an oil pump pick up on it and run synthetic...good to go

yeah also if you buy in a more urban area where if the house sits vacant for more than a minute and someone breaks in for something as little as some copper wiring/piping/furnace or ac unit. see it ALL of the time

fairly certain from my VW days that the rear axle beam has to come out in order to properly remove that tank. i have seen some patches on the top side of those tanks leak small enough to throw a check engine light for an evap leak so I would say patching a fluid leak on the bottom would not work.
