They've been used in Europe and Asia for decades. Now that everyone is "going green" there is a viable market for them here. Aside from the initial investment, they pay for themselves in X years depending upon how much hot water you pump. There was also a tax credit for purchasing one, but I dont believe it has been extended through 08'.

He spent 1300 (of his 1300) dollars on a lifestyle setup all the while claiming himself to be a true audiophile. I described to him the article I read on intellexual.net about the construction, lack of dB range, paper cone "Subs" etc, but he would not hear it having been far too sucked in to the marketing hype that is Bose. I am nobody's kind of audiophile and know next to nothing... but I do know that Bose is a joke.
