Well, I got it to run, but I keep frying the coil for 2/3. I'm pretty sure it has to do with a bad ignition driver on the MegaSquirt. Still runs rather well for only 2 cylinders. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LTY7SS2Lzs

It's still in the box collecting dust.

Meh, I don't prefer handing asses to people. It's just a hobby that happened to include this car, and it's fun to drive as it's quick, but also great for my long commutes as the fuel mileage is excellent.

I actually did call them to see what was going on. They claim to be shaving down the supplied flywheel to determine how thick he can make the kevlar disc. He also said we will most likely have to have an un-sprung hub due to the lack of space (which is fine). This was around March 31st. When I say "who knows if I'll ever get anything out of that" I am stating that I have no idea if they are blowing smoke up my ass just to shut me up or if they are actually doing work.

Just a few updates... I got the new MS3 processor for the MegaSquirt installed and running. What a night and day difference from the MS2Extra upgrade. And just because Rob brought it up, I ended up removing the Ford EDIS module. I am still keeping the 36-1 trigger wheel and the coil backs, but I've decided to fire the coils from the MegaSquirt itself. The EDIS ICM doesn't allow for spark cut and it just gives me more control over the ignition. I also got some new engine mounts which are a bit harsh, but it's better than having the engine rock back and forth. The ACT 6-puck is dead. It can hold about 8psi now before it slips. I've been in a buy-in for a McLeod twin-disc, but that's been over a year now so who knows if I'll ever get anything out of that. I'll just add some more pictures just for content. http://www.plastikhosting.net/uploads/tristanlee85/ms3_proc.png http://www.plastikhosting.net/uploads/tristanlee85/ms3_proc2.png http://www.plastikhosting.net/uploads/tristanlee85/ms3_proc3.png http://www.plastikhosting.net/uploads/tristanlee85/ms3_proc4.png http://www.plastikhosting.net/uploads/tristanlee85/new_mounts.png That's about it.

11 of us have put 50% down for this clutch, and he has offered to give me my share back if I really needed it. I would prefer it to go toward this any way. I know the guy personally even though he is 17 hours away, but sometimes your closest friends are the robbers...
-
One of the guys in Cali took their engine and transmission to their shop so they can mock everything up for us. However, the guy in charge of the whole buy-in is in FL and just isn't so much on top of it. I plan on giving them (McLeod) a call tomorrow and see if they can give me any updates. I guess hearing that they are a big name is reassuring. It'd just be nice for this to be done soon so I won't have to blow more money on a ACT disc again. Blah.

Has anyone worked directly with McLeod for products or just go through distributors? I've been in a buy-in for a twin-disc now for about a year. We were promised the clutches would be done buy the end of April last year, but I'm wondering if they have even cared to try to make something fit. It's a little out of my hands since they live in Cali and it's not my engine and transmission they are using for mock-up. I've never heard of this company up until last year when we all put money down. I'm just curious to know what opinions other have as far as reputation and quality of products... It's really kind of a last resort as far as a clutch that will hold power and last a while. ACT is as good as it gets in the Saturn world, but the 6 puck doesn't last so long if you're making over 300whp. I've managed to get about 20k out of my clutch, but it slips at about 5psi now.

The MegaMeet event for this year has been announced and should be quite epic with all the new MS3 stuff that has rolled out. The date of the event is June 25th and 26th in Reading, PA. More detailed information can be found here: http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=94&t=35202 I don't know if anyone on here went to the Atlanta, GA meet last year, but it's quite an experience for those interested in EFI. While this meet is specific to the MegaSquirt platform, there is so much information about EFI concepts in general that it benefits anyone in the tuning world, even if you dread the MegaSquirt. There will be attendance at a car show, local dyno shop, and the drag strip during this time. I believe the dyno may be for MS users only, but the drag strip will be open for anyone. If anyone is interested, let me know. It would be nice to meet up with some local tuners.

Who is working on their car right now? what you doing

Good good. It's just waiting for the twin-disc clutch that was supposed to be done last May... -
I am selling my tuning laptop that has been used with the MegaSquirt. It's a Dell Inspiron 4100 with a brand new 75GB hard drive. The battery isn't the original Dell battery, but a eBay replacement. After putting in the new hard drive, I installed Windows XP Pro, performed all updates, updated to the latest version of Java, installed TunerStudio MS, installed MegaLogViewer, and turned it off. No pre-loaded software or any other crap. Ready to go. Here's a list of things I can think of that it comes with: Windows XP Pro (fresh install; legit) 75GB hard drive Intel P3 - 866MHz 128 MB RAM Up-to-date with Windows Update including SP3 TunerStudio MS MegaLogViewer (unregistered) USB and serial ports, and a port for a PCMCIA card AC adapter CD-ROM drive Touchpad and trackball-ish thing Default user: Administrator (no password) No wireless, but ethernet jack available The only downfall about this is the screen. The cat thought it was a bed, so there is a line going down through the screen. Obviously you can install anything else on there as well... I just "pre-bundled" it as a baseline laptop for MegaSquirt tuning. Asking $150. http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/5509/20091018214233jpgthumb.png http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8395/20091018214244jpgthumb.png http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8382/20091018215124jpgthumb.png

Who is working on their car right now? what you doing

You haven't put that thing out of its misery yet???? -
Cool. I haven't looked into this thoroughly as I really haven't had that much interest in doing it. Rooted or not, I'd just like to be able to get to a > 2.0 firmware. I see there are links stating the ROM has been ported for the G1, and I do see some performance draw-backs from it (at least what I've read), but it may be something to check out.
-
Ok, I didn't see it posted here or in the link provided: is this an option for users on 1.6 with the G1 to upgrade? I see it stated as "Droid" but wasn't sure if it was specific to that or not.
-
Sweet. Let me know when you start playing with it. I run the MS2Extra 3.0.3 code on my car using the EDIS. I'd be interested in knowing the working of a Subaru.
-
What trigger wheel do you have? I know the 6/7 wheel is supported. How would you piggyback it though? It isn't capable of taking signals and modifying them like, for example, an SAFC does. I guess that's what I consider a piggyback anyway: modifying stock ECU signals.
-
Oh, ok. I saw you said as a piggyback. I was confused.
-
Are you going to use the MS to control just fuel or what?

01 Elantra - overheats, stalls, and blows cold air
tristanlee85 replied to tristanlee85's topic in Tech and Tips
Well I was also thinking HG is the issue, but put that to the back of my mind. It could explain the car dying after it heats up, compression sounds weak when cranking (I'll be testing that tomorrow), and I don't know if it's over-heated before and she just kept driving it. I doubt she did, but you never know. However, I haven't been able to do enough tests on it yet to see if the coolant is disappearing and if so where it may be going. I wish there were 48 hours in a day. -
01 Elantra - overheats, stalls, and blows cold air
tristanlee85 replied to tristanlee85's topic in Tech and Tips
I know the engine is getting up to temp just by the heat come off of it. The gauge itself will read just below halfway when idling. It only overheats when it's driven, but I guess overheating isn't the only time it stalls. I had it idling for a good 10 minutes today and the whole time it stayed just under 1/2 on the gauge. I brought the RPMs up to about 2500 for about 2 mins and then let off the throttle to idle it back down. The RPMs fell very low (300 - 500) and it stumbled, stalled, and I could not get it started again. So, while there seems to be a coolant issue, there seems to be more. The oil looks ok, the coolant did look a bit dirty, but nothing terrible. It was so late at night I didn't get a chance to get too much detail from me. Hopefully tomorrow I can get out my gauge and measure the mixture. I'll get the mileage for you later, but timing belt is something I'm not doing. lol My goal is to make this car so she can drive it home. Other maintenance is at her expense. -
I spent a couple of hours trying to figure out why my friend's car would overheat (temp gauge max out) and then it would stall whenever she came to a stop sign and would not start back up. After I towed it to my place, I started dicking with some sensors and found that pulling the CTS would allow the car to start. Once I had it started, I turned on all the heat in the car and shut the doors and let it idle for about 5 minutes. After then, it was still blowing out ice cold. The coolant hoses didn't feel as hot as they should be for a car that's sitting still idling. In fact the closer I got to the radiator, they felt like nothing was flowing through them. She doesn't know when the coolant was last changed. The only things I could think of would be the mixture was bad and the coolant is frozen somewhere or the heater core is block thus resulting in nothing but cold air. I don't know how the cooling system is routed on that car, but I wouldn't think a blocked heater core would prohibit the coolant from flowing through the radiator and prevent it from overheating. This isn't the first time it happened. I guess 2 days ago it happened on her way home from work and she pulled over twice because it got so hot, and everytime it stalls out it's because she comes to a stop when it's hot. The first thing I would tackle is replacing the CTS because if it's faulty, it could be screwing with enrichments. It still doesn't explain the cold air from the vents though.

And to think I just spent $62 on MW2...

I won't be the one welding. My job is to cut and tack weld everything, and then my friend who I mentioned in this post will be doing the welding. And all of the pipe is schedule 40.

Definitely looked like some editing went on there.
