I agree, and I thought about this when I wrote what I did. However, nobody's gonna pay toyota money for a truck w/ only 2 doors and 150hp. I realize it's diesel w/ lots and lots of torque, but w/ such low displacement, it won't be viewed as a real full size truck by real truck guys, and it likely won't be as mod-friendly as the big cube diesels are now. This combined w/ diesel at 4.00 a gallon right now means that nobody's gonna be justifiying a diesel truck any time soon unless they can tow their house w/ it, something this goofy looking thing can't quite do.

I've been reading about plans for diesel mid-size trucks for a while now. Give it a couple years. I don't think the "Mahindra" will sway many current domestic truck buyers anyway.

You could get a VERY nice VR-4 for the kind of money you're looking at spending. They are somewhat heavy, but honestly what AWD car isn't carrying some extra weight. A lot of the weight is a result of the Active-Aero, Active-Exhaust, and 4-wheel steering systems, which many owners delete. There is tons of power to be had w/ a TT 6G72 engine, and a damn good aftermarket. Go check out 3si.org, you'll learn a lot quick, and maybe find something for sale.

Although the dispute may continue, the OP did stipulate that he was looking for stock or very close to stock car. This probably rules out engine swap cars - especially those going from a rotary to a V8.

While this is a repost. I've heard that some people have had success porting and polishing intake manifolds ( at least ones w/ simple runner and plenum geometry ) and exhaust headers a similar way. They've done it by taking the parts off the car, then filling the cavity only partially w/ fine grit sand, sealing the ends w/ tape, then placing the part on a lathe on low speed overnight. Kinda a cool idea, works like a rock tumbler, and from what I understand can produce REALLY good results if the geometry of the part works with it..... just something to think about .
