Maybe I could move the site to IIS and SQL Server. Then everyone could see what a slow website really looks like.

Actually I did a complete reinstall on a new VM. Hence the DNS change. Also went to a single server instead of separate web and db. Also moved the search/stream functionality to Elasticsearch. Also upgraded to MariaDB 10.3.

@Steve Butters and @JustinNck1 Check the activity streams and let me know whether the problem is gone or not. The indexes are rebuilding, but should be finished soon.

Same here. But I was able to verify over the weekend that @JustinNck1's indeed does take that long, even logged into OR on my phone. I cannot figure out why.

Freaking weird. There’s an option for me to use Elasticsearch instead of the built in search. I’ll set it up this week and see how that works.
