it sounds like all the advise so far has come from people that went to BMI. Backyard mechanic institute. between cutting and braking shit off. Hot steel + PB = shit ton of smoke with a possibility of fire. did you try to pound a different socket on, i know you said the next size smaller but i mean if your using metric try SAE and the other way around. use EITHER heat or PB but not both at the same time. i think a last resort would be cutting the head off and using stud removers i know i've never had to do that, Also impact drivers are your friend you can find them that you can put a 3/8 socket on.

i rebuild GM transmissions all the time, you can do everything with basic hand tools. special tools just make it easier for somethings. no come backs in the few years i've been rebuilding them so i must be doing something right lol

they replaced the short jumper harness from the engine wire harness to the dist. but did they check the wire harness from the ingition system test connector to the PCM? the low res code your talking about is code 16, it can be set if the opti was installed wrong making the timing off and the PCM sees a low res. signal. you can also try an ingition control module (next to coil) the flow chart i'm reading says something about that as well. i don't know what shop you took it too but i don't think i would go there again, sounds like they have Dee Dee Dee working on your car because it doesn't take almost a week to diag. a car.
