  1. Roughly ten years, the economy had started to falter under Clinton towards the end. Of course, I lean towards the republican side, so this is my bias coming out. Yes you do have to look at the policies, but the effects are felt years later. G. W inherited some seriously messed up policies, for example: One of the big factors in our current recession was subprime mortgages. Who pushed subprime mortgages onto banks? Democrats; to make the American dream more "affordable" for the poor (one of their consituencies). Secondly, look at every bill and earmark that dipped into Social Security. 9 times out of 10 it was authored by a Democrat. Lastly, any president can affect the economy in the short term (stimulus packages, tax returns, draining federal reserves) more often than not though; the short term gain is at the expense of long term prosperity and stability.
  2. Fun thought to consider from the middle of the road: http://scan.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2010/03/12/scan.nsq023.long The gist of the article is that we turn off our decision making centers when we perceive someone to be a charismatic leader. Similar things happen when someone is believed to be an expert. The danger here is two fold: Someone like President Obama, who is incredibly charismatic, is above examination by his followers. No one stops to think that maybe a one term senator wasn't the best decision for our country, or that his ideas might not be the best. The same thing happened with Kennedy. Group think ruled the decisions regarding the Bay of Pigs. And our news commentators and casters both, are presented as experts. They have access to knowledge we don't; so we tend to trust their views, and fail to examine it. Somewhere some news source highlighted that the economy was great under Clinton and awful under G.W. This is a true statement, but it doesn't reflect the economy. So we have people we agree with (both sides), and people we like and believe to be charismatic and/or experts. As soon as they say something: It's gospel truth. the Times and CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/22/guantanamo.order/index.html) reported that Obama had closed Guantanamo. Not true, he had actually authorized a committee to look at closing Guantanamo. Or when Bush declared "mission accomplished" in Iraq. Our mission was to dismantle Saddam Husseins government, which we did. Our mission now is to rebuild and stabilize Iraq. "Mission Accomplished" and "War Over" are two different things. 3. Not to dive head first into this one, but the economy tends to cycle over 10 years. So one has to look to the last president (typically) to see what policies affected the economy. Carter's well meaning economic policies were disasterously implemented, which affected the economy under Reagan. Reagan made some boneheaded moves, which affected Bush. But the positives of Reagan and Bush, gave Clinton that amazing and robust economy. Clinton however, torpedoed it for G. W. while torpedoing Monica Lewinsky. And to cap it off, he drained our reserves to deflate gas prices, AND he started the whole sub-prime mortgage thing. Great jarb there!
  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qx0WNEUm-MY Filmed by Henrik Hansen, and there are a few comments that suggest there might be a full documentary on Kimura-san in the works. I hope so. His style isn't for everybody, but his work (and his aesthetic) is breathtaking to me. I pull a lot of inspiration from his bikes and would love to turn out something half as good as his.
  5. True, but the question (and potential danger) that needs to be asked is: Do we now have anything better? Or could we be using it better? The potential danger is this: Oil is a huge, global industry that is very, very profitable. It isn't too much to believe that a portion of the profit could be used to suppress new technologies. Or to even go into the realm of corporate crime. I'm just spitballin' here. Also, don't forget that Iran's current regime would love nothing more than to deface the US in the worlds stage. If a war with North Korea breaks out, look to see Tehran sending "peace keepers" to North Korea with aid. And Al Jazeera to start broadcasting "atrocity" photos. We won't get unbiased coverage on Al Jazeera, meaning the outcry in the Arab world would be ridiculous. And if we stop Iranian troops that could be construed as an act of war, with us as the bad guys. In the current climate in the middle east, war with Iran could spark a "holy war." Many Arab, and Islamic countries, would fall into lock step with Iran. The moderate countries (Egypt, Turkey, Yemen, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia) would have some serious decisions to make. And it wouldn't take many acts of terrorism to cow them. It also wouldn't take much to sway a few generals in Pakistan to stage a coup, and then we're looking at a serious threat of nuclear action. Along with the activation of sleeper cells the world over. Didn't Obama win on hope and change?
  6. There was an article in Sport Rider a few years ago that dealt with a motorcycle trip to India, they rode Enfields for it. The writers kept saying the damn things were bulletproof, and if I remember correctly, one even ended up in an open sewage pit. They just pulled it out, wiped it off, and started it back up. I can't find the article online though. Sorrty It's hard to believe now, but British production used to be the best of the best. And I think that Enfield was out of business before the quality of Britain went belly up.
  7. Thanks for the info! With a little more work, you could even run your turn signals into those lights. Clean looking? Yes. Legal? not too sure
  8. Thanks for all the welcomes!
  9. I've been gone for so long, I wanted to reintroduce myself to the group! I'm Matt (dorifto240 lame story behind that name), I'm currently rebuilding an 87 750R. And I recently started my own design company. REMOVED I figure the motorcycle is a good project for me to tackle as a "job expense" too!
  10. Done that. No luck, the engine won't turn over
  11. Really? It might be cutting out under load you think?
  12. The lights stay on fine, but I'll double check the wiring throughout. Thanks for the advice!
  13. Alright, I've been having issues with starting my bike. As in, it won't. Here's the run down thus far: I've got a fully charged battery and a new relay, but when I attempt to start the bike I just hear the relay click. Occasionally the starter motor will turn once, and then nothing. I've checked the resistance in the all the lines from the battery to the starter motor. I've pulled and tested the starter motor and it runs up fine. There is fuel in the carbs and I don't have the kill switch in the "kill" position. Any suggestions? Could my motor have seized up?
  14. It took me $50,000 and five years at college to figure that one out
  15. UPDATES UPDATES UPDATES!!!! I hit up Lowe's and was able to snag some sheet aluminum for the headlight fairing, and body fill panels, and some steel straight brackets to fab up a headlight assembly. Here's where I'm at thus far. The clips aren't a permanent addition It's the most ballinest thing you can do. Sparkle sparkle baby! Here's the relocated ignition. I'm going to fab up some straps to hold that more securely to the frame
  16. It looks like they keyed it, and then tossed a rock through the window. Luckily Wirthman's had a nissan torn down and gave me a sweet deal for the window. An hour of work and it's all back in and as good as can be.
  17. The sun is shinning, the birds are chirping, kids are busting the window of my truck. Looks like I'm the first victim of the season! Yeah!
  18. If she didn't want us messing up her shit, Mother Nature would have handled it
  19. Ohhhhhhhhhh SNAPS! This is working out perfectly, now I sit back and enjoy the fireworks
  20. Aren't lithium batteries dangerous to the environment?
  21. Don't forget about the water-powered engine from nearby Grove City, Ohio! http://waterpoweredcar.com/stanmeyer.html Then it wouldn't matter at all, we'd never need gasoline again!
  22. The Real Genius avatar is awesome!

"I'd like to see more of you at the lab"

    "Then I'll put on weight"

  23. You'd think after one hundred years of the internal combustion engine, they'd figure out that pesky 70% power loss issue.
