  1. The 300 can be equipped with a power commander, if more power is desired. But it can perform as is, once the rider learns how to ride it. I would rather have to little than to much. Doesn't matter though it has more than needed.

Will definitely pass on the info...

fyi, I was leaning toward the SV650 for her. Thought about the Buell's, especially the Lightning Low, but I don't think she wants a bike she has to wrench on all the time

Also, thought she'd really have fun on a VFR750. :D

  2. This is the focal point of my opinion. She's not a newb. She's not a midget. She's not a little girl. She can probably ride any bike she wants' date=' honestly. Inseam is a big factor for ride height. Almost as important as confidence and ambition. Almost.[/quote']

    ^^^ This.

Thanks for all the input so far! Knew you'd all step up to the plate. She ought to be along soon to read thru and most likely pass her questions on to me, but who knows? Maybe she'll join the madness.

At any rate, not sure what her inseam is right now. And I totally agree and know she would too that she just needs to go sit a few and see what works.

And price range, I'm not sure about.

  3. A friend of mine, currently riding a Honda V65, recently mentioned to me that she is considering a new(er) bike. I asked if she was going to spend the money for a Harley and she said, "nah. sportbikes corner better." Lol. She apparently likes my VFR, having made a couple trips on the back with me.

So she's never been one to post stuff on line, more of a lurker like me, but she checks around on C-list and what not. That's how she found the v65.

Not being an expert myself, I really didn't know what would be the best combo for her. You know, fit versus power in a ladies size bike. She's less than 100 pounds but very fit (used to be a trainer at a Curves) and only 5 foot tall but has a longer inseam for her height than most. And she's an accomplished rider, but mostly with cruisers and dirt bikes.

No, I'm not going to post up any pics...

I know there's a wealth of experience here on OR and I value the information that I've received any time I've asked. So, seriously, what would you recommend? She may read along and I'll definitely relay any information if she doesn't.

  4. doing it all wrong... That's not something you just rush thru, pullin the trigger multiple times without taking the time to savor each squeeze, feeling each impact slamming into your body with excruciating joy as the expression on your face is blurred between a grimace and a smile...

And she shot the damn gun too fast too...

  5. Running the furnace fan is actually not as good unless you have one of the newest high efficiency furnaces. The blower motors are big energy hogs. Its actually better to get a couple fans. Ceiling fans work great for this.

Agreed! Our furnace fan isn't bad efficiency wise. I don't run it all the time because it just doesn't help that much. We have a ranch and the bedrooms get pretty cool since they're the furthest away. This summer if I get time I'm going to plumb in a cold air return over or behind the stove so I can get more warm air circulated.

  6. Two years ago we put in a Jotul to supplement our fuel oil which is ungodly expensive. Saves me about half what we spent on oil previously. Will try to get a pic up. When the stove is burning, we run the fan on the furnace and it helps to circulate some of the heat. You're still going to get cold spots in some of your rooms, but the money savings is worth it to me.

Definitely listen to the tips on seasoned wood, and don't believe these people selling wood in the fall that tell you its seasoned. Chances are they're landscapers that have picked up wood and left it uncut and unsplit in a pile somewhere until the end of their season when they have time to work with it. Get your wood in June or July. Good seasoned wood will "ring" when you bang two pieces together. If it "clunks", it's wet. Wet wood not only burns ineffeciently (doesn't produce as much heat) but it will cause creosote to build up faster in your flu.

One last thing I'd recommend, find a reputable dealer that has a showroom with working stoves. We visited Sallys Hearth and Home in Pataskala during the winter and they had several units running. They are full service and provided us with the paperwork to file for our taxes after the install.

    Good luck.

  7. I was too young when the last ban was in progress. What were the requirement of the old ban? did a pistol grip adjustable stock and detachable magazine that are on almost every AR just become reason to call it a "assault Weapon"?

In 1994, Congress enacted HR 3355, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (103rd Congress, Second Session). Title XI Subtitle A specifies a short list of “semi automatic assault weapons” by manufacturer and model number. It also attempts to categorize long guns not on the specified list under the title of assault weapon by identifying certain observable traits. Specifically, it states that a semi automatic assault weapon has the ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least two of the following traits: a folding or telescoping stock; a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously; a bayonet mount; a flash suppressor or threaded barrel to accommodate a flash suppressor; or a grenade launcher.

  8. Must not be a popular choice... My thoughts as far as home defense goes are mainly with penetration and collateral damage, whether its the 10 yo in the next room or the neighbors next door. I'd be interested to hear about effects on the other side of two thickness' of standard drywall. Of course, since it is a "low power" round, how effective is the stopping power in the first place?

Might have to do a mock up with a two by four frame and some 3/8 or half inch drywall if there isn't any info out there already. Hell, deer season is about over... might as well find something else fun to do, right?
