  1. Class envy.... class warfare..... its ridiculous. The idea of being ok with a football player making tons of money because he's "cool" and "plays" so well yet demonizing a CEO who makes tons of money when he's responsible for silly things like:

    manufacturing a product

    distribution

    marketing

    thousands of employees

    insurance

    advertising

    competition

    stock price

    etc. etc.

 Really? A football player is equivalent to the CEO? The football player IS the worker being exploited for profit and gain, so their salaries are based on the money they bring in. I'm not condoning or saying that professional athletes should make those exorbitant salaries, but without them there would be no professional sports. It's 'profit sharing' in that sense, and their share is WELL above the median income -- and we still have pro sports teams, so it's obviously a successful business even paying those salaries.

All those things you listed, the typical CEO (at least the ones you claim we're demonizing) has little to NO direct involvement in any of those things, and still reaps all the rewards.

Yet without the line workers and the lowly graphic designers in the marketing department, etc., the CEO would have nothing to be CEO over, and the "little guys" aren't making CEO money. Most of them don't get huge profit sharing checks or bonuses.

    Perspective.

  2. Right' date=' but the 1% has more clout than the rest because we don't flush our Capitol Hill toilet often enough. The system is damn near as perfect as it can get. However, it's up to us to make sure the system stays free of clogs. (read: lobbyists, special interests)

We get the system that we allow. We don't pay attention to our politicians. We just assume they're in our corner. We asked for this, whether we actually spoke a word, or not.[/quote']

Well shoot Pauly, just gather up your dollar bills and declog it.

At this point, the only way to get rid of the lobbyists is to become a lobbyist against lobbying. Chicken-egg, man.

Just to give you a quick perspective on what you're up against...

Congressional Aide Lies About Identity To Avoid Answering Questions

Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) was named by John Boehner to be part of the Super Committee on Debt, due in part to his chairing the Ways and Means Committee. It is a choice assignment which Camp has been eager to cash in on:

On the same day that House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., got picked to join the 12-member Congressional super-committee that is charged with deciding the country’s spending and taxation fate, his political action committee sent out [an invitation to a $2500 a head "meet & greet"]

Just think, for $2,500, you too can have “fun” as Camp’s PAC refills your wine glass over chats about mortgage interest deductions, profit repatriation and S-Corporation pass through rates.

We need no longer guess whether Pfizer will have a chance to play a role in the upcoming negotiations, thanks to the Pfizer PAC host duties.

Ah...capitalism! The privilege of hosting Camp's meet and greet came with a steep $5,000 price tag as well. So being on this extra-constitutional Super Committee is a profit deal...that makes so much sense. But if you can't pony up the cash, it appears to be much more difficult to get through to Rep. Camp, no matter what lip service he pays to being available to his constituents. After attending the American Dream rally in DC, internet radio goddess Nicole Sandler, Marcy Wheeler of Emptywheel, Andrew Harman of Change to Win, Sandy Carpenter of ForRespect.org paid a visit to Camp's office on the Hill. After being told that Camp was in Congress and they could speak to an aide, the group was asked to wait in the hall. But Camp's staff wanted to make sure they stayed there, locking the door of the office. Then a gentleman came out and distributed the card of the Legislative Director they should speak to, saying that the director was busy with the congressman.

Funny thing, that. Turns out that Camp's Legislative Director, Rob Guido, was the guy handing out the cards, telling the protesters that the Legislative Director was busy with the congressman.

Bet you if they had $2,500 checks in their hand, Guido would have had no problem introducing himself properly.

And that's why we have Occupy Wall Street protests.

  3. So how long will you let it go before you decide it's not getting you anywhere? Not trying to be a dick about it cause I was the same way before. I used to hold on to things waiting for them to come back which they would eventually. I have found its better for me to cut my losses or get out of something that isn't going anywhere and move it to something else. Did this with some Sirius that had been under water for about two yrs. bought aapl options with what was left and this turned into double what my original Sirius was. In about two months also.

I don't do individual stocks... mutual funds are the way to do it. No load, with an expense ratio < 1%. Like Cleave said, your best bet is probably an index fund, but I don't own any of those because my brokerage house needs a $10k minimum to get in if it's not a 401k, and I'm diversified enough on my own. In fact, I had an Edward Jones consultant look over my picks to see if he could do any better... he recommended some of his own funds (which had heavy front loads), but admitted that my analysis and ratios for the ones I picked indicated good long term performance and there wasn't much he could do for my portfolio.

Also, like Cleave kinda sorta pointed out, I believe the fact remains that over any given 20-year (or maybe it was 25 or 30, I dunno) period since inception, the WORST stock market performance was still at 9%. So pick any 20 years and that's the WORST you would've came out with in the NYSE. I have the research to back it up, it's just hard to find at the moment.

Basically, if you read this: http://www.fundadvice.com/articles/buy-hold/the-ultimate-buy-and-hold-strategy.html, that's near what I'm doing with my personal stash. My 401k is a wholly different story/strategy.

  4. With those kinds of gains I would just let someone else handle it for me. Not worth your time to try and follow the market. Lots of money is being made in this market just has to be played right. This has been my best year and been doing this for about ten.

Not much to handle... I'm "buy and hold" -- my outlook is 10+years with everything I bought. I didn't buy any I expected to flip in the short term.

I just happen to log into my account everyday. :)

  5. I'm at +3% on my portfolio... this market is not fun for day trading. Pick some good mutual funds and stay with them

I agree, I'm only +2.6% now though with the big loser right now being my overseas fund at a -15.3%. :( Unless you want to remove my reinvestments and go on my out-of-pocket cost basis which makes me about +5.3%

About 1/3 of my portfolio are at losses right now, but most of them are hovering around -1 to -2%, while my the other 2/3rds are winners hovering at an average of 6-7%, with the best at 23%.

  6. I'm in need of some advice on traveling...

Specifically, I've got a bunch of custom wires I've made, diagnostic boxes, a multimeter, and a laptop.

Is the TSA going to hassle me having all this cabling/wiring + electrical test equipment + a laptop with me on a carry-on? Or am I better off just checking the stuff?

  7. When you say 'Issue 5', do you mean 'SB5' ?

    I only know of 3 statewide issues: 1, 2, and 3.

/...not trying to snark, just making sure I've not missed something.

Yea, I meant SB5 sorry. Thats the thread I linked to as well.

    Proper word choice is important.

  8. Where has it been determined that what was done is illegal?

I see it as just putting words in other people's mouths that I agree with, just like how I believe guns should be outlawed and wealth should be redistributed to all the poor people.

I agree, nothing is illegal, but neither is being stupid or shady. And stupid people have a hard time figuring out who the shady people are.

  9. What is there to say? The Yes on Issue 2 people are the same people that are Yes on SB5. I expect nothing less from these types of campaigns, and I expect the same pro-SB5 people from this thread.

    http://www.ohioriders.net/showthread.php?t=72644

to try to defend this type of campaign, but they're quietly missing from here.

  10. Did the NEWS channel ever e-mail you back or run this story?

My guess is this is typical political propaganda which is "par for the course" and nothing new. Like it's been said, it's a little disingenuous, but it's not like there's a caption under the picture claiming "These are actual images from my school".

    Mountain > mole hill.

  11. Not so much as the point that working 60-70 hrs a week over two or more jobs and barely scraping by is ridiculous.

I can only surmise that YOU work those kind of hours because it's worth it for you, and not because you HAVE to in order to feed your family.

    But, it's only a guess.
