^ This. The interference of your metal vehicle in the loop increases inductance. I used to install drivethru detectors. same principal. I would think you would need one damn powerful magnet to make enough difference. A rather large rare earth magnet maybe, but I dont see the a regular 3" long magnet doing the job.
