A soldier from Pierce Township died in an attack in Afghanistan on Wednesday. The family of 36 year old Army Specialist Greg Missman learned of his death last night. Missman was fatally injured by shrapnel in an attack on his convoy earlier in the day. Specialist Missman was a member of American Legion Post 72 in Mount Carmel. He belonged to the 4th Infantry Division, 4th Brigade Combat Team serving in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Missman left for Afghanistan just last month, on June 5th. Specialist Missman was a graduate of Amelia High School. He served in military in early 1990's in Korea, then spent 11 years as a civilian but re-enlisted last year on Veteran's Day. He leaves behind a four year old son, Jack. By all accounts, Missman was funny, devoted to his country, and Army strong. "He loved life. He was very proud of what he was doing," remembers Jim Missman, Greg's father. Greg Missman's father, mother and brother are flying to Dover Air Force Base tonight to be there when his body is returned to the United States. Jim Missman said he isn't sure yet on what plans will be for the funeral. Five marines and four soldiers with family ties to Clermont County have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Three were members of the Mt. Carmel American Legion Post. This was my best friend in High School.... I just learned of this today.... Please pray for his family and his little boy....
