Patching and painting drywall

I filled a few holes in my day. 1 thing I didn't read that i like to do especially on like 1/4" screw or molly holes. Is to take your hammer and tap a divot in the drywall, and then sparkle. Also when I was younger and rented, sometimes there would be some fist sized holes here and there in the drywall. And I used newspaper to fill the holes, and then cut a piece of old paper grocery store bag. And mud it over the hole, let dry and then another thin coat or two over top. Then apply paint, and cross fingers on collecting deposit back! Believe it or not, the holes were hardly noticeable when done.

I think you used to live in my current house.   Prior owner put layers of duct tape over a 1.5' diameter hole then painted over it...

From what we've found, his two fixes for any household issue were duct tape and spray foam.  If those didn't work, he gave up.
