Message to CL sellers: don't be a d*ck when someone wants to give you their money

Craigslist is like any other aspect of life. Gauge where the seller is and how they act - it pays to know the neighborhood.  I managed to get a complete surround  set of  floor standing speakers for dirt cheap because the guy's (new) wife didn't like how they looked in their new McMansion.  The motorcycle in my avatar was for sale by a deputy living in a nice northern suburb of Cincy. After BSing with him for a while when I came to look at it, he said most of the people who looked at it were kids or people he wasn't comfortable with. He actually knocked a few hundred off since he knew I was serious and figured I'd give it a good home. Couldn't complain about a pristine, garage kept bike with 8000 miles on the clock and all the service recipts for $2k. It seems like the best deals are from folks in "higher end" neighborhoods  - they sell mostly to make space, not to fund a meth habit.

I was a car salesman. The most annoying response is "what's the least you'll take on it" I always reply. "The amount I posted, but I'll take more"

The art of negotiating is dead! People are arrogant and lazy.

Mostly I trade now. When you trade. The values are only what you say they are. A $900 gun could be worth a $1500 bike if the person wants it. That being said. Ask me how I've gotten all 3 of my bikes. Lol.

I love you guys, you give me hope. Reading CL makes me think everyone is a scammer or idiot.

I always put my ads with a firm price. If no one bites you can edit to OBO. And even then tell them  if you don;t get any better offers in 2 days you'll take it and they don;t want to lose it they may pay your price.

Remember the rule who ever names a price first loses?

My Uncle pointed out they haven't even looked at it yet.

The item could be a condition worth half of what they already offered.

I love people who try the emails.

"Would you take <50% of asking price>?

Sent from my $800 Ipad "

When I was moving house I had a guy email about a weed wacker ask my address.

He showed up unannounced a week later and I made him buy a ladder too.

The opposite side trying to buy something people will email back and forth agree to a time and force you to email back just to ask their address or let the time go by and never send it. Even write back "you never showed up want to try another time?"!

An old non English speaking italian guy came with his son to buy a fridge. When I went in another room to get them change he had lit a cigarette in the house!

I had a garage sale ad once and listed  NO EARLY BIRDS. Then put a sign on the door [Not home from Church until 9am do not ring bell] (wasn't really at church) still had snipers ringing the bell 15 minutes early. Didn't answer the door. They know they can hit 3 sales before 9 and take any undervalued items before polite people show up.

Same neighborhood a guy would come around before trash day up the driveway beside the house and dig through the recycling bin for cans. Once he was picking through non trash items under the carport for metal scrap.

Caught a mature neighbor use a leaf blower to blow leaves from THEIR tree off their driveway into our yard.

You don;t even know where to start reasoning with these people.

+1 on the whole thread!  I bring someone with me on every transaction especially cars or motorcycles and they all have went well.  When selling a bike or car have someone with you and meet in a neutral place preferably somewhere with cameras, this keeps them away from your house.  Before you even start the chit chat, don't be afraid to flat out ask to see the cash and its cash in hand to test ride the bike and a motorcycle endorsement on a license PERIOD!  I have heard some horror stories with this and people getting screwed.  If they are serious about purchasing, they will show you the money or they are just wasting everyone's time window shopping.  All of my bike sales have went smooth.

if i have a high dollar item (over $500) listed on CL, I make the ad like 4 pages long.  if you're too fucking dumb to read my marvelously crafted for sale ads, you're not good enough to own it.

...i still get bombarded by ra-tards though.

I recall having made a ridiculous post once, selling a stupid ricer wing that came on one the MR2's I used to have. The creativity alone got the thing sold for $20 when I was just going to toss it in the trash anyway.

I do agree, people are stupid and impatient. Friends love to pay me to come along to do all of the negotiating for them.
