oldschoolsdime92
Doing a valve check today , I noticed the coating on the inside of my cam cover flaking off. It appears this could clog an oil passage pretty easily. Anyone else ran into this? http://s13.photobucket.com/user/lowxpectationz20/media/9039A622-4612-49B7-B01D-36FB2DD0B68C_zpsr7fu7cku.jpg.html][/URL]
cOoTeR
When I rebuilt my 05 crf450x I don't remember seeing any coating inside of there. I might not have paid aby attention to it but I'm pretty sure it was the same color inside and outside. Did someone powder coat it?

cOoTeR
The one on mine is definitely a golden bronze color on the outside and silver inside.
Tonik
Sand balst that thing and be done with it. Using a very light media of course.

oldschoolsdime92
It's magnesium. Looking on eBay, almost every cover for sale is peeling inside. I don't get it. Mag needs to breath and doesn't hold paint well. I'm not sure why Honda would have done this. I used a dremel today with a tiny wire wheel and while it removed the coating, the dust was brutal, so I stopped pretty quick. ReconRat
I've heard of everything from paint stripper, oven cleaner, brake cleaner, caustic soda dip... not tried any one of them, so dunno.... and have doubts about oven cleaner or caustic soda on magnesium.... edit: oh, and the best one yet from the interwebz.... JustinNck1
I would think walnut shells in a blast cabinet would work pretty good.
