broken swaybar on my stang.

well i broke my rear swaybar some how on my 96 gt stang. it broke right at one of the bolt holes im going to see if a friend , who is a very good welder can weld it,can you tell me what might of broke it or are the stock swaybars just weak when you have mods, and should i upgrade, and how much will it cost me to upgrade. little help. ..... thanks........

i believe some of the factory mustang rear bars ARE welded. that's why they break... tongue.gif

They may be at the factory, but then they are heat treated, something that DAMN FEW shops can do correctly. Buy an aftermarket if you are going to do road courses and the like. Leaving it off is also an option, but it will screw up the handling alot, so unless you just want to go fast in a straight line, and creep around corners, replace it, and upgrade the bushings and mounts while you are at it. It will make a world of difference in the way the car corners.

If you put a larger/stiffer sway bar on the rear you will also want to put its counter part on the front put a over sized sway bar on hte rear only will seriously change how the car hands. will seriously increase understeer or oversteer (i forget which it will effect)

oversteer... ;)

 

most of these cars have a lot of understeer dialed in at the factory. a bigger (within reason) rear bar should actually help even out the car's handling...

 

for anyone not familiar with these cars, the ends of the sway bar are bolted directly to the rear lower control arms, with no bushings or linkage. the factory bars that are known to break have the attachment brackets welded to the rest of the sway bar. the rest are one solid piece iirc and normally don't have this problem...
