This should be the way in every jail/prison

You've gotta love this guy!!

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 year. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

I used to live out near there; I've seen the place. His motives are questionable. While I do agree that a punishment should be a deterrent to crime, I also believe that sometimes the punishment can outweigh the crime. I'll try to find more info for you guys so you know what I'm talking about.

I lived out in AZ for half my life. I agree with how he is treating it. I mean I hate to be mean but ya know if laws were more strict there wouldnt be as many offenders. The judicai system sucks. Period. You can buy your way out of anything. Drunk drivers get 3 chances to kill people before they get in trouble and then still get out of it.. and the list goes on.

They dont like it.. tough shit. they shouldnt have got in trouble especially if they knew there was a chance in getting put at that facility! DUH!

Never mind the rampant corruption in Maricopa county, AZ, and the laws broken by it's own police officers and public officials. Since they don't obey the law either, perhaps it's time they become neighbors to the tent-dwelling inmates?

Wait, if a cop breaks the law, it's OK. Right.

If laws were more strict there would be more criminals. If you criminalize everything, everyone becomes a criminal.

I think you are referring to the punishment, and I agree with you.

It's not like he is beating these people. He's making them work (horrors!!!!), wear pink, sweat a lot, and eat boring food. Oh, and they don't get entertainment (other than the Disney Channel and Weather Channel). So what? Jail is punishment. Sounds like these guys are being punished.

Had a roommate who lived in Maricopa county and saw what was going on. Considering that I don't plan on living there, and he'd have nothing to gain by lying about things like that, I believe him.

there is a fine line between a rumor, missinformation, and a lie. I hear crap every day about franklin Co. from other people that live here, but that doesn't make it true.

I lived in maricopa county and never had a problem because I didn't break the law. My Step sister on the other hand lived in those tents for 2 years for stealing a car, then after geting out she decided to rip of my dad's neighbor and got caught, she did another year. The big problem out there is Gangs.....

I'll tell the ripping off the neighbor story because it is funny:

Her and her gang budies thought they were smart, they planned to rip of the neighbor by parking a truck in my dads garage and shutting the garage door. They went out the back door of my dad's house hopped the fence nextdoor and broke in the back door of the neighbor's house. They carried every thing from back door to back door then through my dad's house and into the garage that had the big garage door closed. Problem was that the Neighbor directly behind my dad saw the whole thing going on from his second story bedroom window. He called the cops, the cops came rolled in the drive way silent. Minutes later her and her gang buddies opened the garage door to leave with the goods and 2 cruisers blocked the driveway to get out! Classic! They all went directly to Jail! The funnier thing was she pleaded "Not Guilty"! Needless to say it didn't work.
